i was reading that you cant fully exercise a GSD until a certain age because of there bones forming? what age would this be, as i cant seem to find my puppy book where i read this in! so how long should walks and play be until this certain age? also what age can they start agilty? oh and lastly! we have put out name down for a Long coat BLue Sable from a KC reg acredited breeder! stunning pups and a lovely lady!!
No puppy should be over exercised not just GSDS as the long bone growth plates will be damaged. a rule of thumb is five minutes walking per month of the puppy's age so 30 minutes walk for a 6 month old puppy Free running(as in your garden) is different as the puppy will stop when it is tired, but I do enforce crate time after exercise to make sure my puppies don't over extend themselves Before you start agility you need good off lead obedience & training doesn't start until dogs are 12 months & competing can't start until dogs are 18 months old Well done on finding a ( even if it is of non standard coat & colour, the blue dilute that is Sable of course is not a colour but a colour pattern)puppy. Do be warned though, KC accreditation doesn't mean well bred nor ethical breeders. GSD breeders who sign up to the GSD League & Club of the UK code of ethics breed under far stricter guidelines than those laid down by the KC
AS far as excersise is concerned I fully agree with the above, also no running up & down stairs till at least 12 months old. As for agility our local club insists the dogs are hip scored before they do any real agility & with a GSD I'd say that was a good plan.
Agree with all above my pup is nearly 8 months we are usually out for an hour but that includes 10 mins playing in the water and 10 mins rest before we return.
hiya thanks yes i know that it is all puppys!! i know its not a standard coat aswell and i know sable is the pattern! i know KC doesnt mean that, but from what ive seen and asked she is the best person ive found, i know KC doesnt mean alot as i know of people givning out KC when there dogs are northern inuits & there selling them on as gsd'S! at the end of the day i have to go to who i feel is best, and you have to start trsusting someone otherwise you would never buy one! shes amember of literally everything and im happy with my choice!! SO excited!!
Congrats Presumably hip scores and other tests have been done on parents I thought you fancied showing??? I would not start any agility with a GSD until at least 16 months of age and also would have hips and possibly elbows scored first too.
Some great advice on walking - 5 minutes per month is a good rule of thumb for me too. Would also agree with Muddiwarx - and waiting til at least 16 months if not 18months for agility - with a large breed better safe than sorry! I wouldn't even start agility with any of my Gordons til 18months.
hiya thanks! yep all dogs hip scored, dna tested, eye & elbow on all generation of dogs!! ill send you the link if you want to check her out?! we can show at the long coat society, but i am really hoping to get a Akita in about 2 years and show that dog!! yes i want to do the puppies classes and things first and wondered about the agilty, i will dif get hip & elbow scores done before i start anything like that first then!!
hiya! have put our name down for a sable long haired blue, but i really think we might get a black & tan!!! still got ages to decide yet! will be long haird though, or i have found out that you can have a 'plush' coat & still show.................
You can technically show a longcoat that has an undercoat (my Flame does) but it would be doubtful if you would get any placings.
I have a long coat white GSD, and she is so scrummy! I would love to have a look at your breeders website :smt001
Lacey got a BOB once and several class placings in her younger days before her movement became really dreadful
That doesn't surprise me at all, she was such a beautiful girl Flame looks more and more like Lacey the older she gets.
