Hi guys, Though i would start a new thread and ask for some recommendations of good smooth coat chihuahua breeders, I would be willing to travel more or less anywhere so it doesn't matter whereabouts they are located. Also do Chi breeders normaly have waiting lists? If so how far in advance would you normally ask to be put on one? Thanks x
I would imagine good breeders have a waiting list. Look about on champ dogs and the KC website, but go along and meeting people will be best. Make sure you like the dogs/owners/way they are kept. make sure you have questions you want to ask and things they should be checking out about you. Meet and greets arethe way to go IMO
Hi,I have a friend who breeds both Long Coat and Smooth Chihuahuas.Usually you find that the average litter size is 2-3 and frequently they are not self whelpers and have to have a caesarian,therefore increasing the length of waiting lists for decent puppies. Ask what health checks they do to their breeding stock as well. At the very least they should have their knees checked as luxating patella can be rife in small companion breeds. Good Luck in your search. Have you contacted any of the breed clubs? Becky
Ok so health tests include knees are there any other health tests they should have done? No I haven't contacted any breed clubs yet as like i said I'm not really sure of when you should contact breeders and be put on waiting lists etc. Ideally I'd like a puppy from a litter born end april to mid may '10. Would it be too soon to be contacting breeders yet? I just don't want to leave it to the last minute and all the good puppies are already reserved etc.
It's never too soon to go on a waiting list and that way you can really get to know the breeder and their breeeding practices, visit their dogs in advance etc. Becky
Ok thanks Mahooli, its just trying to find a reputable breeder now, it's so confusing as I don't know the breed i have no idea which are the best breeders etc.
That's why if you start contacting them now you can work out what kind of person/breeder they are and hence avoid a possible expensive mistake. Also by checking out their adult stock you can see whether they are of the type you are interested in. Remember if you don't like the look of the adults then don't by a puppy because that is what they wil turn out like! Hence I always show my adult dogs to people and tell them this is what they'll end up like! Becky
I contacted one breeder and they just said they hadn't got any puppies and watch the website for updates, which isn't really what I wanted more some general advice and information on planned litters and reserving a pup from a future litter etc. Guess all i can do is keep trying though
