Gazette Relaunch – Still Some Way to Go, Says KC Discussions

As I am not a part of the showing world, nor do I breed dogs any more, I do not know whether the Kennel Gazette is something that should be carried on - and would be interested in hearing what others think.

I have posted the article in full as I do not know whether this information is general knowledge or just for members of the Kennel Club.

THE REMAINING members of the Kennel Gazette working party are to continue their work in a bid to resurrect the Kennel Club’s former magazine.

Confirmation of this was made by the KC today following the sudden resignations of four members of the group.

It has not yet been decided whether others will be recruited to take their place.

Chairman Geoffrey Davies, Jean Lanning, Jane Lilley and Simon Parsons stood down on Tuesday leaving Pat Brigden, Philippa Gilbert, Gay Robertson and Ron Stewart to carry on the work. Mr Davies said he and other members felt ‘demotivated, hurt and insulted’ by the General Committee’s response to the group’s plans to revitalise the Gazette and that his position had become untenable.

He accused the General Committee of obstructing their work.

Mrs Lilley called the situation illogical and said the current situation was unworkable, adding that the working party’s progress seems unpopular and unappreciated.

Mr Parsons resigned due to work and other commitments. He said he thought it was important that an editor was appointed for the Gazette as soon as possible and that he or she received full support from both the General Committee and the staff of the KC

The working party was formed following the KC’s AGM when members voted strongly in favour of Mr Parsons’ proposal that publication of the monthly magazine, which closed a year ago after 133 years and had been replaced by the online Kennel Club Journal, should be resumed. The aim was for the magazine to be relaunched in April.

The group has met four times at the KC’s London offices with Sara Wilde representing the KC staff and Ian Gabriel the General Committee, which is the KC’s board since it became a company limited by guarantee.

Matters came to ahead after Mr Davies received an email from KC secretary Caroline Kisko advising him of the board’s views of a draft business plan submitted by the editorial group.

“The board was critical of the budget, stating that its members felt it was not sufficiently robust or detailed enough to enable them to make a decision with regard to taking the relaunch of the Kennel Gazette forward,” Mr Davies said afterwards.

“The board also felt that more detail would be required in the plan. However, the board members failed to identify what further information they actually require.

Despite the fact that the KC had been given a ‘mandate by the membership’ to resume publication of the Gazette, Mr Davies said, all the editorial group had received from the club was a ‘lack of encouragement, difficulty with the provision of essential information, and continual delaying tactics’.

Today KC secretary Caroline Kisko thanked members of the working group for their efforts.

“The KC is sorry to learn of the resignation of a number of those that have contributed thus far to the group discussing the future of the Kennel Gazette,” she said.

“The General Committee provided feedback and offered advice to the group in response to the outline plan which had been presented at the committee meeting on November 17. The remaining members of the group have accepted the offer of financial advice and a meeting will be arranged accordingly.

“Those who have contributed to date deserve thanks for their efforts, though there is clearly some way to go before a viable plan is finalised.”

At the KC AGM, the members vote was substantially in favour of reinstating the Kennel Gazette. The steering group have managed to put forward substantial savings in the cost of production, (the reason for its being discontinued by the KC), but it seems that the KC is reluctant to give the go ahead.
Personally, I liked the Gazette, which was the only official place where future championship judges, and a diary of upcoming show and trial dates appeared. Also, rule changes, or changes to breed standards were published prior to their becoming set in stone the following year. I enjoyed the features - which were not always about KC events, the editorial comment, and especially the featured breed issues. I still have the ones where my particular breeds were featured (if there ever was a Beagle issue, I didn't see it). It was always interesting to read the reasons for any disqualifications, and the results of disciplinary cases.
I am sure that it will be back, because the membership want it back, and the KC can afford it; but how soon, and in what form, it seems is still a work in progress!
