sorry i need a rant and as im sure you guys will understand better you are the lucky ones that get to read. We have a husky at work and after being in for a few days he has bit one of that staff today. He has bitten her on her arm quite bad and left a nasty puncture wound on her hand. She is an experienced member of staff and has no idea what she did to upset him. We are now faced with the uncomfortable task of telling his owners who have small children (i hope they dont do anything drastic if this is his one any only time doing something like this) we also have to treat him as a dangerous dog for the rest of his stay which means no contact or walks, using the shutter on pop hole to his outdoor run to make sure we are separated at all times. This doesnt make us happy as it feels cruel and only makes the situation worse in my opinion. I was telling a male friend about this today and he commented that it was because she is a woman. He says woman are attacked more by dogs as they see us as weak. I thought he was joking at first so ignored him but as he continued i realised he wasnt. He said woman shouldnt work with large dogs or have them as its to dangerous. He knows i have Phoebe and used her as an example bringing up the times she has hurt me. I have never considered myself weak, physically maybe as im only 5 foot tall and 8 stone but i never thought of myself as mentally weak and i dont believe this of any woman. I cant believe that anybody still thinks this way. I got quite annoyed and pointed out that he couldnt handle a dog as its nothing to do with size when it comes to dogs its about what you know and how you behave. Phoebe would have him begging for mercy in seconds. shall climb down from my soap box now
Hogwash! Size or sex has little to do with it - attitude, consistency, will power and gaining the dog's respect and trust are far more important imo.
Unfortunately more & more huskies are now becoming dangerous & are suddenly turning on people & biting them regardless who they are men or women.
Very true. Huskies have become very popular round here, they all belong to responsible people and they are all lovely dogs, friendly to both dogs and people.
I wouldn't worry about that chap's opinions Katy - he obviously knows nothing about dogs and I imagine the smallest of dogs would be able to run rings around him!
I am afraid we meet people with little understanding in all walks of life, I don't bother to argue these days I say my piece politely and move on...
Stupid man take no notice hes talking tripe' brute strength maybe, but that’s about it, Was their circumstances leading up to him attacking or was it just seemingly out of the blue.
Hed been in for about 4 days so been walked and played with by all the staff at this point. Nic walked him then had a little game of ball in the compound in te front of his kennel block. Then opened his door and told him to go in, he did then turned and lunged at her she put her arm up so he got bock of her arm. She then went to shut his door and he bit her hand. She managed to shut the door and come find help. She then went to a&e for stitch in hand and a shot. As thats the routine for all dogs in that block he had had the same rountine twice a day for 4 days so really have no idea what set him off. Nics pretty sure he wasnt playing. That particular block is l shaped and we made it sqare with high gates so they can have a little play in the compound after walk and while we clean their kennel as its only big dogs down there. My brother is down today so hes going to come take him for a big long walk for me wearing a muzzel as hes getting a bit hyper now and trashing his kennel. Glad im not the one telling his owner.
I wonder if this is to do with badly bred Huskies due to the rise in popularity of them after the film Eight Below: Funny how a film can have such an impact on what breed of dog becomes fashionable..
Game of Thrones and Twilight,seem to be the reason nowadays. Seems strange that having been fine for 4 days he suddenly decided to turn, could be he just had an off day, he dosent sound dangerous if hes been living with children.
I hope the outcome for the poor dog is not bad, and I agree with you all, any dog can bite no matter if you are male or female.
Was ok. My brother let him out in to the compound and stayed away from him. My brothers huge and doing security with his dogs hes really in to all that alpha male thing with his dogs. So he just totally ignored him at first and within 5 mins they were friends and playing. He did get a bit over excited and mouthed my brothers hand but he soon realised is was a bad idea and let go. My brother just stood up really tall and let out a low growel then went back to totally ignoring him till the dog calmed down. Hopefully the long walk and good game of fetch will keep him calm till he goes home sunday as my boss still says he remains a non contact dog and will do on future stays. Staff generally ignor the rules as we all have a few dogs we still walk even though told not to but nobodys volutering for this one just yet. I have 4 that i shouldnt be walking but i have never had a problem with them. My boss operates a 1 strike and your non contact 2 and your out. My brother has offered to help the owners if they want once we tell them what happened. But living 50 miles away he cant come very often.
