Has anyone out there ever purchased nuvet product plus that supposedly helps prevent tumors or growths?? Our first weim died of cancer & we r trying to help our rescue weim live longer?? thanks louislouis
Don't think there's anything that can stop tumors, but there are medication that will prolong your dogs life.
I'm sorry you have had a sad experience with your first Weimeraner. I haven't heard of this product, but don't see how it could prevent all tumours. I think a good, well balanced diet, and plenty of mental and physical exercise is the best that we can do for them. Welcome to Breedia.
Okay personal opinion, not everyone will agree. The first thing is diet, I believe a raw diet or a very high quality kibble is a must. Filling a dogs body with chemicals and E-numbers is not natural and can lead to problems. Along with the chemicals I believe that most people over vaccinate. I think the best measure is to get puppy shots done, and then titre test to check immunity rather than vaccinating again without knowing. There is also a natural type of "vaccine" which is called nosodes and can be safely used to help a dog keep immunity to different diseases. Another thing is I don't like chemical wormers and flea treatments, again unnecessary chemicals being put into a dogs body. For flea prevention you can add a small amount of garlic to your dogs food, and for treatment you can use diatomaceous earth to rub into the coat and to treat the house/carpets/furniture, it is completely natural and safe to use around other pets too. For worming diatomaceous earth can be added to food to prevent worms, a worm count can be carried out routinely and if worms are found you can use a bigger amount of the DE to treat for worms. Another very controversial subject is spaying and neutering, research has shown recently that S/N can increase the chances of some cancers, especially if the procedure is done early. I believe ideally a dog should be kept intact, if an owner can not guarantee that they can prevent unwanted breedings then a vasectomy or ovary sparing spay could be used to prevent any pregnancy but keep the dogs hormones intact, if an owner doesn't feel comfortable with that or is having trouble with behaviours then I say the dog is neutered at 18 months earliest for a small or medium breed and 2 years at earliest for a large or giant breed. Basically I feel that keeping the dog as naturally as possible without using a lot of chemicals is the best way to go.
I think there is sometimes a genetic link to breeds getting cancer and there is nothing that you can do to stop it. Its just down to luck. I lost both boxers to bone cancer at 9 and 10 years. Both fed a grain free diet with raw occasionally. Minimal chemical treatments etc and still lost both young. Star was spayed but Finn never neutered.
I believe cancer in dogs is very much the same as cancer in people. Sometimes there is a proven genetic link, but often there is just no known reason as to why cancer suddenly appears.
