Hi there. We have 2 dogs now, a 5 yo schipperke and a 4 yo Pomeranian. As you know these 2 have their own "issues." My husband was a K9 handler MP in the Army for 8 years working with Malinois. He's been wanting a bigger dog for sometime and we found a breeder in our state. Normally wouldn't do a breeder but I'm confident for this breed it's the best way to go. With my husband living with PTSD, dating back to losing his Malinois in Afghanistan, when it probably saved his life, I do feel like this would give him a genuine purpose. I, however, have much anxiety about adding a 3rd dog for many reasons but at the same time am excited about the idea. Thoughts?? Any and all info or opinions greatly appreciated!
I don't think anyone can put themselves in your shoes, or know how your other two dogs will react. I can only make a comment or two. Firstly, Malinois are a high energy breed, and you are right to buy from a breeder, based on the temperaments of the parents, and their health status. Starting with a young puppy is the best way of not inheriting someone else's training disaster. Your husband has been a service dog handler, so you will have to trust that he has the experience to enable the new puppy to fit in with your existing pack. Does he intend to do IPO, (Schutzhund), or tracking training in the future? This would build a solid relationship, and allow him to use his dog handling skills as an outlet for his PTSD. If so, there may be a downside, as serious dog training is addictive, so expect to see rather less of him as there will always some element that needs to be improved. However, just think of the boost to his morale when he comes home with that first IPO Qualification, or Tracking Certificate.
