What colour is your mums girl? I only know of parti-colours blue roan etc. Also has she had the KC/BVA eye tests, that will be the first thing stud dog owners ask for after looking at the pedigree. Also how old is she?

You may find you have to travel to find the right dog, have you tried contacting the breeder of your mums girl?

If I can't help, Louie may also have some info.

Has she had a litter before? Because 6 or 7 is way too old for a first litter, if she isn't KC registered I don't think any KC registered stud dog owners will let you use their dogs, also if she hasn't had any tests that will definitely be a no go.......sorry! :-(

hmm. Don't know about the tests etc. best being left up to CC to answer, but I would have thought 6/7 years old was a bit too old... I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure they wouldn't breed a 6 year old!

They would have to be KC registered I'm sure...

when you think about it, you need to consider the health of mum too and at 7 years old she's not old but she's getting there considering people generally breed bitches around 2 years old. You wouldn't advise and 'older' lady to have a baby.

I may be wrong, just what I would have thought.

ETA - CC got there before me! We must have been posting at the same time!

Hi Melons :) I agree with the others about the bitch being rather old for a first litter....I guess you mean the cocker is a golden? Why does your Mother want to breed from the bitch.:) First you have to find a stud dog of a compatable line to the one your bitch comes from, even if the bitch is KC registered and health tested the owners of the stud dog will be unlikley to let you use it on a bitch that old. If you breed from a bitch that age there is an increased chance she may need a caesarean or could die :-(

Hi melons as everyone else has said your mums girl is far to old to have a first litter. I,m sure your mum doesn,t want to put her life at risk and there won,t be any reputable breeders who would let her use their stud dog when she is this old and hasn,t had eye tests etc. Breeding puppies is very hard work and all sorts can go wrong even in a young and healthy bitch. If your mum just wants another puppy it would be far better to buy a puppy by contacting a reputable breeder. Good luck :)

Hi this isnt her 1st litter before we had her she was in a puppy a farm in wales but was sold to us when she was only produceing 2 pups in a litter i think she only had 2 litters, i have told my mum that i think she is to old and she wouldnt be able to cope with it but aparently she is gagging for it although i dont see what that has to do with her actually haveing a litter i thought all dogs were gagging for it when they are in season!!!! I will tell my mum about everyones advice and i hope she does listen, thankyou all for your input.

P.S it wil be my mums 1st time breeding a dog and if she is anything like i was when my dobe had pups it will give her heart failure!! lol

Besides her age (even though it apperently isnt her first litter) breeding isnt just about finding a stud avaible.

Its about making sure your bitch has something that is worth continue in the breed. Knowing the good and bad in it and finding a stud that hopefully can make up for this.

To breed just to expreinece having puppies isnt recomandable imo

If she has already been a mother, especially in a puppy farm, I think it would be kinder to give her a rest, and not breed from her!
After all, her sole purpose in a puppy farm would have been to reproduce. Much kinder to let her live out her life without any stress!

Of course the bitch has a strong hormone-driven urge to mate at this time. That does not mean that she should be bred from. Has your mother not been through a season before with this bitch, or has she had her only a short time?

The kind and responsible thing to do would be to have the bitch spayed in about 3 months time. And keep an eagle eye on her while she is in season.

Didn't realise she was a rescue dog, then I would definitely say NO, the poor girl was probably bred from at a really young age, breeding isn't easy, whelping isn't easy and rearing pups isn't easy, it can be very expensive and heart breaking, please just enjoy her as a pet!

Also puppy farms don't rehome 'good breeders' and hence it is likely that the bitch may have issues with either carrying or whelping the pups.Vets fees for pregnant bitches can be HUGE.....please persuade your mum to rethink...this little lady deserves a retirement not to be breeding more pups
