Smart dog! Rocky was forever getting up on the worktop when he was a pup and I had no idea how - till I spied on him once and saw him hop on off the bin first!
Well they shouldn't leave food in the grill or whatever it is, he looked bored and was searching for something to do, so mischief inevitably follows. I have enough trouble keeping Milan's head out of the sink, she's obsessed with it and thinks nothing of stealing a soggy washing up sponge to destroy. Thankfully she has no need to jump on the worktops because she can reach everything while keeping her back feet on the floor. I have to stick things in the grill, oven or microwave if turning my back for a second where she's concerned the doors are far more difficult to open than that grill was.
I do not leave any food out - not because of Pereg but because of the mice, although I have to be careful when putting shopping away in the refrigerator or to go in the store cupboard, as look away for a second and she is ready to walk off with it. However she did learn how to open the pedal bin by lifting the lid with her nose so she could then stick her head in - took her over five years to try it though, so I had to put something heavy on the lid which was a nuisance as I had to take it off when I wanted to put something in the bin. But I very recently foiled her! I bought a tall-ish stainless-steel bin which has an automatic opening lid when something is passed over its "eye" [it then closes automatically]. It also has buttons to open and keep it open, then close it, if you need to put more than one thing in. She did put her face over the "eye" by accident when she was examining it, and the lid opened under her chin! Luckily it is very lightweight but she backed away and just stared at it in amazement and has not gone near it since!
Believe it or not I've NEVER had a dog who jumped on work counters in the kitchen, emptied waste bins or begged for food during our meal times. None of them have been trained NOT to do things like that .... they just never have! When we get home from shopping I usually dump the grocery bags on the kitchen floor then make myself a cup of tea before unpacking the meat and whatever else I've bought. The most Georgina andthe cat will do is have a sniff around the bags but touch them NEVER! Maybe its because my dogs aren't intelligent enough to think of naughty tricks to play on mum but I'd like to think because its never occured to me .... it never occurs to them!
Well different dogs do it for different reasons, Milans is because she spent time fending for herself living on the streets as a puppy, she was starving, painfully thin, filthy and had been shot with an air gun. She had a huge infected mass on her back as a result of being shot. Being that hungry is something that never seems to leave them no matter how well fed they are. Milan is now 7 and will still scrounge even immediately after being fed. I guess you take what opportunities you can when you don't know where or when your next meal is coming from.
Phoebes big enough to counter surf so nothing is left out. i cant leave her in kitchen if im cooking as she can reach the hob (although never tried to take anything from it) she can also open our oven. She could open our old fridge freezer and raid the fridge as it was on the bottom we have a new one now so shes opened the freezer a few times but not been very impressed as she cant open the drawers. Just wish she would close it after
