I just became the owner of a 2yr old dog. He's such a sweet, handsome boy I just really do not care for his name at all lol, and tbh he has not answered to it once. Not even an ear twitch. I wonder if he even really knows it.... He responds to my whistle and the smooch, kiss noise lol. He's a lover I don't think it fits him very well either. Anyway, what are your opinions on changing a dog's name?
I have two rescue dogs and I've changed both there names they didn't know their names either I just kept calling the name I chose it didn't take long at all for them to learn it
I changed all bar one of my rescue dogs names, they soon cotton on to their new names (15 rescue dogs)
I was once told all you need to change a dog's name is a bag of bacon lol. I've been trying to come up with something good but it's tough lol. I want something cute and clever. He's a Samoyed so I've thought about Nanuk (polar bear in Inuit) ...... Before I knew what breed these dogs were, I always called them polar bear dogs. I've also thought about Aspen. I do want something winter-y or with a winter/snow type meaning behind it. If anyone has suggestions feel free to share.
There is a fluffy white dog which belongs to the owner of the boarding Pension where Pereg used to go for a few hours daycare maybe once a month. They were very original - not - in his name, calling him Sheleg which is the Ivrit for Snow! [almost as bad as me changing Pereg's name from the name I originally gave her, ie Poppy!]
As I've always had puppies it's never been a problem ... until I had Georgina. When I went to collect her from the breeder I had every intention of calling her Pandora but changed my mind when I was told she'd been named Georgina after the baby prince, and even though she was only 9 weeks old at the time, she already knew her name. So I decided to leave her name as Georgina, although more often than not it's shortened to Georgie.
I have given my rescues new names, as there is no way of knowing whether the name carries any negative connotations. For example, has the previous owner used the name to chastise rather than as an encouragement. Have they called it repeatedly, but allowed him to ignore it, so it's just become a background sound? I would say YES, pick a positive sound that makes him look at you, and reward it, - he'll catch on in a couple of days.
based on the fact i can call Phoebe anything with an e on the end and shell respond i think changing a name could be quite easy. I can honestly shout fridgee and Phoebe will come. Try a few sounds out on him and see what he likes and what sounds good to you
I got 2 rescues dogs and changed both their names. The eldest one was 5 when I got her and it didn't take her long to cotton on to her new name. Thought it was going to be hard with her being older but it was much easier than I thought x
I always change a dogs name if they come to me from bad situations. A new name, a new beginning. It has never been a problem.
