So I am trying to breed Leo and Bailie again since it didn´t take last time but Leo won´t even take a second look at her this time around. So I took Bailie to the vet today since we know that Leo is fine. I got the prove right here in Hope. They took a smear sample and some blood and it cost a fortune! But I will feel so much better once I get the results and know if something is wrong. It´s a little strange that it didn´t take the last time and that he is is ignoring her now. Bailie was such a troop today. She didn´t even flinch when the vet did the smear and only flinched a bit when the needle went in for the blood sample. So now I wait untill tomorrow to get the results.
Good luck Dagbjört! [There were none of these tests available when I was breeding - it was either they did the deed or they did not, and either it took or it did not, and it was just down to luck - however proven the dog and/or bitch was.]
Yes Dagbjört breeding is not cheap at all it cost me nearly £3,000 when we decided to breed Skye & K9 - we had both Skye & K9 checked by vet, Skye's pre-mating worming treatment & flea treatment, then the scans once Skye got pregnant, special bitch food while Skye was pregnant, then once the puppies were born there was the home visit by vet to check puppies over he was looking for cleft palate, then worming treatment for the puppies at 4 weeks 8 weeks & 12 weeks, puppies gruel when weaning off mum, puppies 8 week injections & 11 week injections, puppies microchips, puppies food, it soon adds up, but my vets did give me a rough idea how much it will cost beforehand. We did recover some of the costs by putting K9 up for stud after Skye had her puppies- he was mated with England's top JRT bitch & the previous years top JRT bitch & both runners up bitches - K9 was the top JRT male for 2 years running & is the top JRT male for the last 3 years.
Interesting comments here. Bella is only 16 months old so she is far too young at the moment but I am wondering whether to breed from her in the future. Apart from the cost is there anything else I should be aware of. Primarily she is a much loved part of the family so I wouldn't want to put her through anything that could put her at risk.
Must make sure both your bitch & the dog are checked over by a vet beforehand, also make sure they are not related uncle brother, granddad. cousins so on, talk to your vet he might be able to give you names of some stud dogs.
Wow those are very impressive titles on your boy I would love to see the outcome from that breeding if you have pictures. I would also make sure both dogs are tested for whatever might be a health risk in their breed and that the female is on a good diet before she gets pregnant. Since some breeds can have a harder time with whelping, like bulldog and pugs, I would contact your breeder and have her/him guide you through it. It has been a tremdeous help for me. When I went in yesterday I was met with another vet than I usually go to but since I trust my vet I also trust whomever she hires so the new vet did all the testing. However my vet called this morning and told me that after she reviewed the pap smear, she thinks Bailie is reaching the top in her estrus soon so I have to make a decision if I want the vet to impregnate her by hand. But I am going to see first if Leo will show any interest when he comes home tomorrow.
Will contact the bitches owners see if they have any photos, do know one of them had a lovely white puppy that had one black ear & one brown ear, which the breeder kept & then went on to be top bitch in 2012 when she was 3 years old.
If only everyone who breeds takes some of this advise there wouldn't be so many litters just bred for 'quick and easy money' or so they think.
So the vet inseminated Bailie yesterday. Leo´s produced just fine and was very interested in the BC female they used to get his juices going. Bailie did really good and it didn´t hurt at all. She did not like the interest Leo was showing the other female though. But I am going to keep trying to mate them over the weekend if Leo cooperates and the vet asked that Bailie come in again on monday to do the insemation (am I spelling that right?) again. So everyone cross their fingers and toes for puppies please
Fingers crossed for Bailie that she conceives. And hopefully Leo will decide he fancies her after all! It is "insemination" Dagbjört but your English is just about perfect - far far better than my Ivrit - and no way could I type in it!
