Can someone tell me what tests BC require and at what ages and how to go about it please. Many Thanks.
1.Eye screened before 12 weeks regardless of whether the parents are DNA CEA clear as there is a very rare type of eye condition that hasn't got a DNA test(I can't for the life of me remember the name-but a puppy from CEA DNA normal parents was found to have it at the 6 weeks eye screening) 2. BAER hearing tested. 2. DNA tested for CEA(CH)/CL/TNS/MDR 1 as soon as possible. 3. Hip & Elbow scored @ 12 months or older. 4.Clinically screened for PRA @ 2 & every year there after The clinical screening & eye testing can only be done by a BVA/ISDS/KC panelist(list on BVA site) BAER hearing test can also only be done by a specialist. Hip & Elbow scoring, the X rays can be done by any vet who has X ray equipment, but I prefer vets who have experience of X raying for the BVA schemes The DNA tests for CEA(CH)/CL are done by Optigen(USA) & I think the AHT also now do CEA testing. TNS/CL testing is done by Alan Wilton in Australia MDR 1 test is offered by LABOKLIN (UK)in Manchester Needless to say that any BC being bred from now(or being purchased for breeding now)should come from fully health tested parents, the minimum I would expect is Hip scored, PRA clinically eye tested, DNA tested for CEA(CH)/TNS/CL & 6 week eye screened for the parents & eye screened for the puppies
Hi Joedee, Sal was asking the question on my behalf, but I've signed up so I can come and bug you myself now! I've got a 16 week old BC pup from good breeding lines. Originally bought as just a pet but what I want to do is get him tested for all the necessary and if he's clear of all health problems, got a good hip/elbow score and does well in the ring possibly offer him at stud. What tests would you advise getting done first? And what age can the various tests be done from? Thanks Alan
