Well, this is a Beagle forum, so perhaps we should celebrate a really successful week for our breed. Firstly, in the UK, the annual Dog World / Eukanuba Pup of the Year was won by the appropriately named Eardley Stew Pendous. This competition was held at Crewe Hall, Cheshire, and the winning partnership, Jones and Jepson, are based in Stoke, so they didn't even have very far to travel! Yesterdays news was even more stunning, as the Canadian Beagle, Miss P, completely took the bookies by surprise by beating some highly fancied winners, - including the Portuguese Water Dog, Matisse - to become Best in Show at the USA's premier show, Westminster. Two beautiful Beagles - which look even better on video. A sincere Well Done to their owners.
I think they both excel on the move. For under 15" dogs they cover so much ground, with parallel movement, and great reach and drive. I saw Stew Pendous (Teaser) win his first Res. CC from Minor Puppy at the Houndshow, and was hooked - I love him. However, I do wish that Miss P wasn't strung up quite so much. It is probably my Cavalier and Obedience background, but I believe that all dogs that have approximately correct conformation, can be trained to move and 'pose' on a loose lead. I just hope that the publicity doesn't create a demand for Beagle puppies, as there are already enough in Welfare. They may be sweet looking, clever, and comical puppies. but they are also working dogs, which can also be obsessively greedy, selectively deaf, and, unless you can channel their energy, very stubborn.
Sadly your late, the last 3 years they have hugely grown in being the it dog. they have moved up from think mid 20's to 5th in the US.
@CaroleC are there 2 types of Beagles ? Standard & long legged, The Beagle I see regular on the park is roughly 18-20inches & as long legs, can't get closer to owner/dog to ask her about her dogs, as the dog is wearing an CAUTIOUS harness & her smaller Beagle is wearing an NERVOUS harness. Do know both are ex laboratories dogs, she as had them roughly 6 months now
I don't claim to be an expert on Beagle breeding, but there are different types. Our UK show bred Beagles carry a lot of American breeding, but the hunt packs have their own stamp, generally finer in head and bone than the show lines. The very large specimens could either be Kerry Beagles, or be a throwback to larger (pre US imports) English stock. The fact that you give 18 - 20 inches would lead me to suspect Kerry breeding. There are a variety of types and colours shown on the Kerry Beagle Association website. Hope this helps.
[My emphasis] Have a look at her "collar and lead" in this picture: That is Miss P not in the show ring but on Broadway in the show "Kinky Boots". You can also see her "strung up" in this picture: Why does her owner not put a normal collar and leash on her when she is not being shown? http://www.broadwayworld.com/articl...-Makes-Broadway-Debut-in-KINKY-BOOTS-20150219
She seems to have a lovely placid temperament. My lad would freak out if that purple creation tried to kiss him!
She definitely does - passed around like that and not even blinking! Incidentally, how is Eddie doing now?
As another Beagle lover, I was surprised and very pleased when Miss P won. When Uno won not long ago, I was overjoyed to see a Beagle win top prize and I thought his win would have to do for awhile. Now, along comes Miss P and really puts Beagles out front. I read that Miss P and Uno were from some of the same bloodlines.
