I had Bailey and Shady Weighed today. Shady is 18 months old and weighs 46.3kg but she does have Newfoundland in her as well as GSD. Bailey is 4 years old and weighs 40.0kg should I be worried about Bailey or is that a decent weight for a male GSD his size
Males should weigh between 35kg-40kg for West German dependent on height I have known some English weigh between 46-56kg
Sounds fine to me too. Stone weighs in at a puny 32.5kg at 3.5 years old - he's quite a slim build anyway. His best buddy GSD is 46kg but it's hard to believe as he doesn't look it.
hi imo weight is unimportant, its how your dog looks and feels, its like saying what does the average human weigh lol;-)
I wouldn't be worried with Bailey's weight, as it sounds fine - and as long as he looks/feels fine and is active and healthy, then there is nothing to worry about
Hi, I agree with Moobli. So long as he's happy and healthy and not obviously over or underweight, you have nothing to worry about. For us, Yiannis weighs 32 Kg at almost 17 months old, is a very low bulky build/body type and is a very slim build. Zane on the other hand is 10 months older at just over 2 years old and weighs 59Kg, although there's no more fat on him than on a chopstick. He's the very tall, leggy type. It just depends on the size and build of the individual dog and if Shady has Newfie in her also, then there's a good chance she'll be much bigger and heavier than Bailey anyway. Laura xx
Make sure their body condition is right, an dlet the weight fall where it may. Shepherds often refuse to eat enough to become overweight. Often if the ribs don't show, they are fine. Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them. Each dog is different. Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs.
