An article I would like to share General Chat

Nothing special but then again it is everything special to those of us who love dogs. It is an article that moved me and brought back so many memories, so I thought others might like to read it.

I Just Can’t See Him From The Road

Last night while camped in the Bighorn Mountains I sat outside for a moment and looked up at a star spangled sky; at 8500 ft and with no city lights your able to see what folks saw before electric lights bleached out the sky. I closed my eyes for a moment and as it happens every so often I thought about Mike. I was seven and he was 9, a B/W Cocker Spaniel with a goofy happy expression. He had a tuft of hair between his eyes, a curly back coat that hid his docked tail and long ears that collected all kinds of stuff when he dragged them through my Mom’s garden. Every kid should have a Mike; a gift from a friend of my fathers Mike was AKC registered and had produced several fine puppies we were told.

Mike and I did some truly amazing things together, he was my morning alarm clock, that tongue lapping my face made me giggle. I was often awake before his wake up call but would keep my eyes closed so he could wake me in his special way. I remembered how we would sit on the back step and Mom would give me Rhubarb and a bowl of sugar to dip it in and Mike got to lick a few of the stalks. The two of us did amazing things together. Once we stopped a bank robbery, we really did! It was an easy task, I strapped on my Roy Rogers gun belt, put on the 78 rpm Roy Rogers record that I loved and me and Mike put an end to those varmits just like Roy and his wonder dog Bullet.

Mike always had ear infection problems and back then there were limited antibiotics. Our veterinarian tried and tried with little progress. Mikes gait became unsteady and he often would curl up in a corner and sort of hide. On Saturdays we often went to visit my Grandparents and on one such visit Mike came along so he could see the Vet while Mom and I visited. I will always remember how we were sitting there watching the radio, back then the commentators were amazing and you sat and just stared at the radio dial entranced. The phone rang and Dad explained to me that Mike was in pain, was not getting any better and he and the Veterinarian felt that the best thing for him was to have Mike put to sleep. I cried and begged but Dad made the hard and right decision and I never saw Mike again.

The Saturday that Mike left was 63 years ago. As Helen Keller once said, “What we have once enjoyed we can never lose, all that we love deeply becomes part of us”

I still cry when I think of Mike, I can still see him in my mind I just can’t see him from the road.
