Hi Looking for any advice/useful info anyone can offer.. We currently have a 1 yr old male springer (neutered) and have often thought about getting another. Recently a springer has come up for rehoming on a local rehoming/rescue..it's a male..however he is 14 and we are not sure if he would possibly be too old to tolerate our 'playful' young springer. (you can see 'patch' on the DAWGS website in the dogs section) Also, we live in a 2 bedroom flat - although I think there is plenty room for one more... Obviously the rescue people would look into the situation/homecheck/vet ref and see how the boys got on if they thought we were suitable...but i'm just wondering if anyone might have any advice or similar experiences Sorry if this is a bit jumbled! Thanks a lot Deedee xx
Awww how nice that you're considering rehoming an oldie! Rescues are fab! All I can say is every dog is different and the best thing you can do is contact the rescue centre and let the 2 dogs meet. With regards to living in a flat, if you already have a Springer there won't be much difference if you add another - in fact they'd probably entertain each other giving you some time off! Some rescue places can be funny if you don't live in a huge house with an immaculate garden and manage to be at home all day, but still afford the huge house with the immaculate garden! But given this dog is 14 I can't see it being a problem. ;-) Although 14 is quite a good age, Springers tend to be quite young in spirit and long lived so here's to hoping it all works out!
Congratulation on considering rehoming a mature ES. My predecessor was Minsky - an English Springer and it has taken 6 of us setters to replace her !! Mother says that at 14 she was still a 'norti-thing' and very young at heart and she would certainly have coped with a youngster. She lived an active life until she was 19. Preplan your case to the rehoming centre and prove how well you are looking after your lovely boy because I am sure they would be (rightly) concered about a springer living in a flat and let the two boys meet on neutral territory and see how they get on. Then take it from there. Good Luck Thalice-Malice English Setter
Good luck, At nessr we wouldn't have a problem re-homing to you as long as all the Homechecks and vets references came back ok, the most important thing for us would be if the dogs get on. I have fostered oldies here and what you tend to find is they will put the youngsters in their place if they have had enough, having said that i had a 9yr old not so long since who was playing like a puppy by the time she left. Go for it, i have decided when i get too old for the youngsters i will have a house full of oldies
If it goes ahead and the two dogs seem to get on OK, remember that there may be a few teething problems in the first week or so as they settle in together and don't think it will always be like that. Persevere and I'm sure things will settle down. That was my experience anyway. Good Luck.
Hi, Thanks for all your responses. The place is closed on the weekend and although I sent one of the email things from the site I think I'll phone tomorrow morning as I hope it shows I am interested. Then take things from there... Will let you know how I get on.. Deedee
Phoned first thing this morning..turns out he is already on homecheck. Although they said they will keep us on file in case it's not suitable. At least he's going to get his home
Aww what a shame..you're bound to be disappointed though. Still now that the idea has been planted you may see another one that would suit. It wasn't meant to be this time though.
Hi Please, what ever you do, don't get disheartened. Sadly there are lots of Springers looking for new homes. I am sure that out there your new companion is waiting when the time is right. Like Lizzy23, I am also a volunteer for NESSR, and sadly, Springers come in on a daily basis :-(
Hi, Yeah was a little disappointed - however glad he has found a home somewhere. I am getting a homecheck from NESSR soon I think - think they were having a problem cos I'm quite far up the country. Hopefully it will be successful and we will be able to rescue a springer
