Hi all, I have a Staffie called Kyza, he has only just turned 2 and has been diagnosed with this L-2 HGA. He is a very happy, loving dog and is like my bestfriend, he comes everywhere with me, even to work lol . At the moment he is not getting any worse or better, He has all the symptoms bar sizures. I can not excercise him or his back legs lock on and I have to spend hours trying to calm him down n not let him off bed or take him to vet to be knocked out. He is currently on 5 x L-Carnatine and 1 x Vitamin B every day and a chew from pets at home for muscle stiffness which seems to help as when he hasnt had it for a while his legs get worse. Can anyone advice me on this illness or give me some advice on how to treat it and also let me know if there is better muscle stiffness treats out there. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks Shari
Hi, I have just replied on the other thread, Welcome and and I am sorry to hear about Kyza, Have you read Bosco's story,if not here is a link http://www.freewebs.com/parbeau/boscosstory.htm If you contact his owners they may be able to offer you some advice. As you probably alreadly know there isn't a cure for L2 and it can only be managed.
I don't know if the system will let me post these links if not I will try and find a way to get them to you. One is to Breed council health page and the other is to a good Bull breed forum where you will find buckets of information on L2 Hga and some people experience of dealing with it. The owners who where to ones to be affected by it and their fight to find a test for it. http://www.staffords.co.uk/dddt.htm I am sorry that you dog is affected with this condition and having seema dog with a bad case I get get a bit anal when trying to get new puppy owners to buy health tested stock. Good luck I hope you boy stays well.
Have you told the breeder because if you boy is affected there will likely be others in the litter who are also affected the rest of the litter will be at the very least be carriers and both parents are carriers so should not be bred together again. This is a recessive gene so both parents must be carriers to produce affecteds
And to just add to this, you are quite within your rights to take your breeder to court, and claim all your fees back. Ignorance is no excuse to not test or worse breed from affected dogs. Maybe you could highlight this to the owners of your dogs brothers and sisters if they are planning on breeding. I get so angry with those who breed without carrying out any testing Grrrrr
I was going to say about taking breeder to court but thought I would wait a bit The test has been available since 2005. So the test was available but the breeder chose to not use it. The others who intend to still breed with out testing need hanging. A few through court will soon stop them.
I agree,I myself wouldn't hestitate in taking a breeder to court, they should have tested as you said the test was available, they chose not to bother, now a poor dog suffers health wise and his owner fiancially and has all the worry too, all because someone couldn't be bothered. :-(
