Does anyone have a french bulldog?

hi i am researching this breed to see whether one will fit into my family, does anyone actually have one? do they get on ok with other dogs? when buying one what health tests are they to have? Anything i need to avoid, also i would like to show if pup likes it, what colours are best for the show ring?

Anything you can tell me about this gorgeous breed would be a great help.

    Many Thanks

    Angela.

Hello, I have just joined and see you are looking for a French Bulldog advice. They are not the best dogs if you are going to be away from home for too many hours they thrive on human company.
I have two. My younger dog I had to go on a waiting list for which I don't mind because then you know the breeder is interested in where the pups are going. We got him at 10 weeks old and he is now over 2 years old, he is just a baby. Loves cuddles and carried around but also loves a good hour walk at the park where he can run and play.
The older rescue is a lovely wee dog also but has a few issues. Its probably best to try and get a puppy and you can mould him and train him properly. The secret is to socialise them at puppy classes as soon as they have had their injections and also make sure they are in the company of people and they should grow well balanced and get on with both people and dogs. They are a terrific breed. I hope this is helpful.

Main health problems are respiratory and eye issues - mainly down to their compromised anatomy. I've also met many with sensitive digestive systems. Big downsides are the snoring/snorting/snuffling - like with any brachycephalic breed - they also shed a lot for a short-coated breed so do need some grooming.

Personality wise they can be a bit stubborn and also suffer from lack of confidence issues, leading to nervous aggression or dog-dog issues in some individuals if not really well socialised etc. A good friend of mine has a rescue frenchie who is very wary of dogs he doesn't know, and pretty much anything he hasn't met before. He did have dog-aggression problems because of this but they have been overcome, although he's still a scaredy-pants now at least he's not aggressive with it. Generally they seem quite quiet, sweet, loving, settled dogs (in their own environment) and don't need much exercise.

    Hello

I agree that Frenchies have some problems that come with the breed. I think if you are careful when choosing a good breeder you will get a good healthy dog. My young dog is particularly healthy, loves his walks and is gets on very well with nearly every dog he meets. He is particularly confidient which I really believe has a lot to do with the breeder keeping the puppies with their Mother and siblings until they are at least 10 weeks old and of course the way you bring them up yourself as I explained before. The older dog is a different matter because he is a rescue and has had a very different upbringing, although still very friendly with people not always good with other dogs.

    Hello Angela,

My post was away before I could say that my younger dog is not neutered and yet gets on well with other dogs because he is well socialized but the little rescue is neutered and does not always get on with other dogs. Definately to do with breeding and upbringing.

Sorry I tried to send photos but without success. I will have a look and see if there is an easy way to do this.

Hi there - do you mind if I ask which breeder you went to for your youngest dog? I was going to PM you but you don't have that feature available just yet?

If you'd rather not say online I understand:002:
