Well I promise I won't multiple post every day (have a feeling sam will keep me busy enough over the next few days lol) I have initial bought some complete dry food as this is what the animal sanctuary were feeding her. Any thoughts on wet being better etc? If I do change, I guess very gradually? Thanks again all
There is sooooo much out there, depends on your pocket and how active your Sam is going to be. When I first got Ben he was on Iams yea I know, but that was what the rescue centre had him on so I kept to that. I then changed to JWB but was getting a bit expensive when Poppy came along. It is a great dog food though. I now have my 2 on Jolley's own brand, Life Science. it's a good mid range priced food and much the same as JWB, fat content etc. Elaine xxxx
What food have you got? Good quality dried food is good (NOT bakers!). You can either moisten it with warm water to make a gravy or feed it dry depending on what she likes! I sometimes add a pack of nature diet (good quality wet food) to our dogs, or a tin of chappie. Or sometimes you can add mince or leftovers depending on how her tummy is! i am sure you will find out, lol!
Some dogs do fine on Bakers, but essentially I would compare it to feeding your kids skittles - it is full of e-numbers. So it can send some dogs a bit 'loopy'. Personally I'd have another word with the rescue and see exactly what complete food they have been feeding her - there is such a huge range and changing from one brand to another quickly can be a hard on a dog's stomach as changing from wet to dry. They may have a bag of her existing food they can sell you and then you can gradually change over to something you prefer....though if she is doing well on it, you might just want to keep her on the same food. As for wet, I don't think there are many on Dogsey that feed tinned food (with the possible exception of chappie which has a good reputation for dogs with sensitive tummies) -generally it is poor in nutritional value compared to dry. Having said that I used to feed it to my old boy as it was all he would eat, and he was fine on it.
These have Chappie and Wagg (Chicken). Bruce has a funny tummy always has had, so Chappie for him as we have no problems in that department and we're all happy.;-)
Ok the thing that surprised me was in asking the animal sanctuary they replied "oh complete dry but varies day to day from value to good depending on donations" !! Well only bought a small bag of bakers, so will use and replace with something else as soon as finished or if she starts to get hyperactive etc lol! Thanks
Sorry about the bakers!! But you would find you had a hyper dog if you feed it for long and would make your life a lot harder! Good quality dried food (from a pet shop or country store not a supermarket) would be Arden grange, Burns, James wellbeloved...try searching the old threads for ides Good luck xx
Watch out for the glow in the dark poo's Only kidding;-) although Bakers does make the poo an unhealthy looking orangey colour. If I were you I would scrap the bakers, give it as a donation and start as you mean to go on. Yea Wagg is a good dry dog food as steph says, but my too could not tolerate it, runny poo's Elaine xx
I feed my dogs and cat on Burns and like Honeysmummy i also use Nature Diet wet food mixed with Burns for their evening feed. Me personally would bin the Bakers and put it down to a bad buy.
Actually!!!!!! When and how much would you feed her then, while I'm here!??? Ok last minute panic setting in lol
Breath, breath you'll be fine. As to how much, it depends what it says on the packet - this is only a general indication and will depend on how much exercise she is getting etc. Some people only feed once a day and their dogs are fine that way, I prefer feeding twice a day - morning and evening. Generally the lower quality foods require you to feed more than the higher quality foods. As for the rescue feeding whatever they have - they can't afford to be choosey, but believe me (from one who shovels s**t at the local rescue), chopping and changing isn't ideal for many dogs and they do get the runs. Others do have iron constitutions and seem to be able to cope with anything.
Beagles are extemley greedy so you are going to be strict with yourself. I feed mine 8oz of a good quality dry a day,but because we walk alot with our two(3hrs) we add another 4oz each of wet with their evening meal. After feeding try and wait at least an hour before you take her for her walk.Good luck not long now
Yoiu can get Harringtons from Asda, thats a good food as well, if your nowhere near a pet shop. Elaine xx
we have fed lots of different foods just keep to the 1 she likes ,yes some foods have more additives in but we give kids sweets and fizzy pop and we know it isnt good for them dont get hung up on what you feed sam for every dog that has "good food" there is a great dog that has tinned supermarket food,IMHO you dont decide what your dog will eat they do.have fun with sam beagles are COOL.
In the end got The Natural Dog Food Company All In one Chicken! She is enjoying it and her pooh was ok last nght, a bit wet but she has just come home and first time on the food. Seems a good food with good nutritional value etc. Still not sure I'm giving enough or too much though lol
I'd probably tend to err on the side of slightly underfeeding rather than overfeeding as its easier to put a bit of weight on her than to take it off. Over time you will get to know what is right for her. I don't actually feed my dogs the same amount each day. The weekends i'll usually feed more because we can be out walking for 4 or 5 hours a day, whereas during the week they're only out for half this amount.
