Over the years I have known many Collies called by `traditional` names, like Fly and Shep, etc. Which do you prefer, traditional or not ? Or did you not really think about a tradition element when naming your BCs ? Mine are non-traditional : Defa, Willow, Gremlin and Silk Three were already named when I adopted them and as they are deaf there was`nt any point changing their names. My fourth, Gremlin, I called her that because of her ears
Fudge was named after her mum who remained behind in the rescue when we adopted her. I am glad to say that she too was rehomed shortly afterwards. Not traditional.
Leoti was given her name as i wanted something different for my third collie her name is native american for Flower on the Praire my other two have common names Benjiman and Megan
I like none traditional names partly because you dont want to be at an obed/ agility show and everyones dog drops flat when you say "shep down" or whatever So I have Rook Sprig and Ruby was Ruby when she came at 6mths Jeanette
The farm I grew up on had Floss, Bess, Pippin, Shep and Skip, I grew up Shandy and Sue, then we had Tom which my kids chose and know Jack, which was his name when we got him But personally I prefer different names, the more unusuall the better I like to be able to call my dog and not have half the neighbours dogs come running
Boomer was a rescue and already named. Bertie was KC registered Bertrum Bert by his breeder and I couldn't think of a name, so just stuck with Bertie. Teagan I named, not traditional, but I do shorten it to Teag (pronounced Tig). Skye was named because of her blue coat. Have you seen this website with the names of ISDS registered BC's http://www.bcdb.info/dognames.htm
Humm...first one Skip....(I was Second one Jasper (Jazz)....third one Tassle.....fourth one Siren.....I guess theres a mix there.
My first Bc when I was growing up was Tinker, second was Cassie, third and current is Esme.... Tinker was KC named Prince, but he was such a "tinker" aparrantly, the name stuck, Cassie was always Cassie, and Esme was KC registered "Whisper", cannot remember why we changed it.....
Previous collies owned are Taurus,Gemma,Tammie & Misty. Collies we have now are Amber,Puzzle,Kaos,Denver,Morse,Shawnee,Cody & Mouse Ann
Ben is named after a great dog of my childhood who started me off loving collies I also like the idea of using natural things and forces of nature to name a dog - I was going to call Ben lightning cos he had a tiny white flash on his head when he was a pup - but it has gone now so I am glad I didnt so Ben is also the Scottish word for mountain For girls I like flora names - like heather and bracken But Mia came with her name and as she had already had a few name changes in her small life we stuck with it
My collie is called Jet - which is a traditional name. In fact I chose it because it is traditional (and I liked it). I don't actually see that many collies with traditional names - although there is another Jet that we see occasionally. However my Jet never gets confused as to which commands he should obey. There was also another Jet at his puppy class (a Labrador) and again it didn't seem to cause a problem. Fi
Ben was Billy when we picked him up at the rescue centre. I didn''t much like Billy he sort of didn't suit him I chose Ben, because he looked like a Ben and I also wanted a B sound. Poppy was named because it was Rememberance Sunday when we decided we wanted her!!! and she suits it too!! Elaine xx
Ours all have traditional names. I think it is possibly partly due to them being working sheepdogs and I much prefer traditional names for collies. We have Moss, Rip, Bill, Rob, Mirk, Mossie, Tip, Greg, Eve, Meg, Lad, Nap.
My first ever dog was a Border Collie, who was named "Glen"., My parents named him, and seem to have gone traditional. When I moved to Orkney, I wanted an Orkney name, but the trouble with that is that there are still people using the old Orkney names. One of those older names is "Rognvald", the name of Orkney's patron saint. However, Rognvald's original name was "Kali Kolsson", so Kali started us on Saga names, many of which make great dog names! The late, great Snorri-dog got his name from "Eyrbyggja Saga", although it was a bit of a misnomer, because it means "Naughty Boy" in Icelandic, and Snorri was anything but naughty! He shows up in several Sagas, and he was a bit of a "fixer"! "Thorgeir the Lawsayer" turns up in a couple of Sagas, he was the Speaker of the Icelandic parliament, on whose casting vote Iceland accepted Christianity. He was also a friend of the original Snorri the Priest. So we have started our own tradition, I suppose! Snorri
We had Breeze our deaf boy and now have Astra Zephyr Sky - (Zephyr means gentle breeze in Hindi) and ravenhill Blazing Sunshine or Sunny as he is known We also have Jazz our JRT and 43 cats so names not a problem it sometimes takes a bit of time to see what they will be - Sunny answers to Bunnikins and Sky to Sky B and Jazz as a JRT pleases herself!
I have Skye which i guess is traditional, but i like unusual names too I originally wanted to call her Buffy (after the vampire slayer!) but seeing as we already had Willow, and my rabbit is called Angel.....OH wouldn't let me, so we chose Skye together Jann
Loving hearing the names and the reasons behind them, both for traditional and non-traditional, Snorri I love the tradition you have underway for your own crew and Moobli it is so fitting yours having traditional names as they do their proper traditional job There are loads more Collies on Dogsey though, please lets have more names being shared guys
These Icelandic Sagas are a rich source of potential doggy names, although Thorgeir was very nearly Ragnar Lodbroken (Hairybreeks)! I have a selection of names already that I will never have the doggies to "wear" I suspect that Thorgeir may well be our last doggie, unless I am VERY lucky. Snorri
