Hi There, The lady who owns the farm i keep my ponies at lost her 6 year old Rottie last week, it had to be PTS due to bone cancer :-( It was a rescue dog. She is understandably heartbroken, but wanting to start looking into getting a pup again. She has asked if i know any breeders.. hence me being on here! The dog doesnt have to be show quality, infact, the lady likes the longer muzzles so non-show quality would be preferable lol She's wanting a pup, up to about 4 or 5 months old.. Does anyone know of any breeders with some nice pups available or due? Or with an older pup they've run on but hasnt turned out? I dont know any rottie breeders so cant help at all Thanks Guys!
Please ask her if she could take in another rescue. All the rotty rescues are full to overflowing and they are having to turn dogs away on a daily basis. There are whole litters being handed in because people just can't sell them at the moment. There are pups and dogs of all ages needing homes . Try Rottweiler Rescue Trust, Rottweiler Welfare Association and Rottweilers in need
Is it really that bad for Rotties at the moment??? That's awful, whole litters being handed to Rescues
Yes it is I'm afraid. Just one of the rotty rescue centres had 135 calls wanting dogs rehomed by the middle of Feb this year and its just getting worse. Don't know if its the bad press (although we've had that for years) or the 'credit crunch' but its very sad
She has had several rescues with problems, the last two being rescues that she lost at a young age, both due to bone cancer which she has been told could have been due to the young age the rescues spay them. So she would like a pup from a breeder. It will be a family pet so it MUST have a known background.
A friend of mine has had 3 rotts from 'good' breeders over the last 12 years, one was diabetic, one dropped down dead at 8 months and one got heart failure at the age of 7. Getting a pup through a breeder is not a guarantee of good health. My oldest rott has been diabetic for 8 years and has had arthritis for around 5 years - again from a 'good' breeder The breed rescue centres are very very cautious about rehoming to people with children and most will only rehome dogs under about 6 months to a home with kids. They do a lot of observation and temperament tests and a lot of dogs are placed in foster homes so their behaviour in a 'real' environment can be observed
I do appreciate that people want her to get one from a rescue, but i did also say the same to her and she wants one from a breeder, so can people just respect that and point me in the direction of breeders with HEALTHY rotties. And maybe say what health tests she needs to be checking for and stuff like that. Thank you
Er, OK I was only trying to be helpful both to you and the dogs in rescue - pardon me Have a look at rottweilers direct, they have a list of pups available and they should be responsible breeders. Back yard breeders don't tend to have their names on lists like these. Avoid places like e pupz As for health tests - hip and elbow scoring is a must, some rott breeders are heart and eye testing now, temperament tests.
Rottweilers direct?? That sounds a bit dodgy I was hoping for personal recommendations of breeders as i know it can be a minefield!! Perhaps i shall just contact the breed clubs locally. Thanks for the health test info
rottweilers direct is a dedicated site for ethical breeders only. does your friend want a dog or bitch? i know where there is a 6 month old male....PM me for details iff you're interested but rescue is in great need for homes for puppies
Hi, She is prepared to wait as it will be a family pet so the right dog is a must, temperment is the most important thing. She is only looking to get a bitch (not sure why but she did say they wouldnt consider a male) so thats a shame, but if you hear of any more that would be great.
I agree that Rottweilers Direct seems to be anything but dodgy. They have a code of ethics such as only Hip Scored dogs should be bred from, no breeding consecutive seasons for bitches etc. Lots of the breeders who advertise their litters on there are very well known indeed. I have to totally agree with Netpon though - just because some breeders are well known, not all have good healthy stock (despite their claims). One of my Rotts was from a very well known kennel and his breeder was high up on the board of a high profile breed club. Not only that is a Rottie judge who travels all over and awards CC's. Suffice it to say I thought this was a breeder I could trust good stock from. Not so - the dog was ill almost from the get-go and the breeder simply didn't want to know.:-( I hasten to add this dog is NOT Marius I am talking about, he is the soundest dog in health and temperament I have ever had the pleasure of owning. I am a huge believer in getting a breeder recommended from someone who has bought a pup from them before. At least this way you are (hopefully) getting a non-biased view.
Jessica, I waited 2.5 years for my Rotti, first off I rang the KC for a list of breeders in my area, then rang those that were closest, picked one and we hit it off right away, she asked me 10m ?'s and I her lol, BUT she had just sold her last pup I then went to meet her and her dogs so that I wouldnt be wasting my time and hers by waiting for a pup and the rest is history ;-)
