I've just been reading my local paper's small ads and in the pet section there was an advert for 9 week old Pugaliers. Well I had to read more cos I had never heard of them. It turns out they are a cross between a Pug and a King Charles Cavelier Spaniel The price? £600
bizarre.. really hope the novelty value of these names wears off soon, because that's all it is really isn't it? There's no purpose behind doing this, just a marketing ploy - a dog with a funny name. Buying a dog on the basis of this seems ridiculous to me!
I have noticed there has been a real boom (so to say) in this "designer breed" idea. I really think it's terrible. It seems to be really getting on the side of out numbering pedigrees. Ah whilst on the subject recently i saw an ad wanting a pedigree boxweiler
More and more so called "designer breeds" popping up and yep, they all have that kind of price tag, labradoodles, cockapoos, labweilers/rottadors, boxweilers, you name it, if someone can make money from it they will. There are a number of genuine accidental matings and mismatches of course, but some of these matings are very obviously deliberate and purely money making schemes. I noticed it when i was researching both my crossbreed dogs roots (rottweiler and labrador) before rehoming him as a pup, and noticed that this cross is very popular in the US, and starting to get that way here too with a number of deliberate litters, and people actually placing ads specifically looking for this mix.
Some people will just always want the next, rarest, newist animal that can make them different to other people. Apparantly the latest craze pet is the African pygmy hedgehogs.
Yep we have had people wanting to board "Pugaliers" paid silly money and they are just crossbreeds that look like crossbreeds. I have recently boarded two Labradoodles and my word they could be anything! The one I ahve in now looks like a fat Lurcher! and the BOTH moult!
I believe the puppy farmers are making a mint churning out these so called " designer dogs " . All these " doodles " seem to be more expensive than poodles Everyone wants the shaggy haired labradoodles but some of them are born with smooth hair which nobody wants .
It's amazing what a name can do to a cross bred dog... Wonder what I can call Ben... He's a Great Dane X Ridgeback.
Ah and we're back to the portmanteau names thing... Some of these breeders are clearly trying to pull something... some on the other hand are probably just accidental matings or home breeders wanting to be 'cute'. I am always curious at 'pedigree' cross breeds, I assume the well meaning are trying to say both parents are pedigrees, just of different breeds... Kismet is a 'Huskamute' or Husky/malamute, she's not a 'pedigree' because both her parents were husky malamute crosses as well. Her grandparents were pedigree though... I use 'huskamute' as a name cos it's easier than husky cross or malamute cross to explain quickly. Its a tangled web... and er .. great ridgedane? Great daneback
This is something that really does tick me off how people can sell such a thing under false pretences that it's some kind off breed. The majority in the rest of the info do state that it is crossed with certain breeds but a fair few do not they just use this made up name! why use these names if it's a cross it's a cross don't get me wrong i would happily pay just as much as i have for my full pedigree sibe for a cross if it suited our family to a T so its not that i have anything against crosses, crosses are some of the most gorgous dogs around as they can have their own cute individual look i just cant agree on this whole silly name thing. Here's a few i've come across on my browsing cockapoo- £625-£750 cocker spaniel x toy poodle whyamiadoodle- £125 ono weimarana x poodle labradoodle- labradore x poodle jack-a-doodle/ jackapoo £250 £300 jack russel x poodle chipin- £500 chiauhua x miniature pinscher jackuahua puppies - £250 jack russel cross chiauhua Huskamute- £600 Sorry for the rant everyone, if i have caused any offence i do apoligise x
