Got the scores back, have to say Im a bit dissapointed but hey thats life, my highest hip to date has been tegan with a 3/4 Vinnie {Darcguard Trademark} Elbow right 0 / left 2 score of 2 Hips 6/6 Holly {Darcguard Hallmark} Elbow 0/0 displasia clear hips 6/3 I know they are not terrible scores but nor are the super,,, I guess we all hope for that 0/0 for everything,,,
If they are below the breed mean then I wouldn't be dissapointed. That's considerably less than some that are used for breeding! Becky
Have to agree with Becky that if below the breed average then I would be happy! Think we all hope for 0/0 I guess!
The last mean published by the BVA back in 2006 was 13 (median of 9). I wouldn't say those scores are bad, they are both below the mean Shame about the ED in Vinnie's left elbow though
Hip scores: The radiographer grades the different sections of the hips (nine in total). A score is given as to how far they deviate from a joint with no HD. The minimum score for each hip is 0 and the maximum is 53. Therefore the range available is 0 - 106 (where 0 is no HD and 106 is a completely dyplastic dog). Each breed has a mean and a median score (obviously this becomes more reliable the greater number of dogs that are scored). The BMS can be found on the BVA website - BMS 2006. Unfortunately that is a little out of date now as it is over 18 months old (however our breed have actually stayed the same). Elbow dysplacia: They check each elbow for 'signs of primary lesions and/or osteoarthritis of the elbow'. Elbow dysplacia grading only has four possible scores, 0, 1, 2 and 3. 0 = Normal elbows 1 = Mild ED 2 = Moderate ED (and/or Primary Legions). 3 = Severe ED Where as they add the scores together for hips, the final grade for elbows is the highest elbow score (so a dog with 0/2, 1/2 and 2/2 will all come out with an overall score of 2. If you want more information as to how the actual procedure is carried out then check out the BVA site for Hip Scheme and Elbow Scheme HTH Source of data was gathered from the BVA site a while back for my own research.
I'd be pleased with those scores, Slight shame about the one elbow score & the one uneven hip score but they are still good.
thanks guys but I had kinda wanted better, Sol is to be tested soon I shall wait to see how his turn out, Yes some are breeding from far higher scores but its not really good for the breed, Some thought needed on my part re vinnie I guess, The BMA is 13 for hips so he just scrapes through, there is I believe no BMA for elbows as not many breeders in rotts are doing them, I guess its because its becoming a big issue in rotts at the min, more and more elbow displasia is being seen, I had a young GSD which came to the club who at 5.5 months was diagnosed with ED, it was horrendous, he and his owners went through hell, with no joy in the end, the poor dog was in agony, this made me more determined to do elbows, There are so many breeders in rotts {now dont laugh its 100% true} who would condem me for using vinnie as he has a two,,,, but if I did I would prefer to use him on a zero bitch,,,,the problem is I have not met many who do elbows,,so you would be working blind, they would give it wellie about it anything to bad mouth another rotty owner/breeder even though they dont know what they are breeding from because they only do hips, It only cost a few pounds more to do both,,,so why dont they all do it? guess there is a bit of we are safe if we dont,,,,but if we do and its not fab we are f c kkked cos we bad mouthed those who scored there dogs.
