Oh dear I feel a headache coming on:smt001 So let me get this right. Lisa and Anne are two different people, but they both started with rescue Sibes in the 70's, they have both therefore got 30 odd + years experience with the breed:smt001 Small world huh, with just the internet to get us all together
Wow I can't understand how rude you guys all are and i thought Husky people were nice people, they have been so far in my experience until I found this forum Just because someone doesn't agree with another's way of thinking or doing things, doesn't give them the right to make insinuations, try and discredit them or try to bring the other person down :smt018 Just because some of you don't walk your huskies off lead doesn't mean everyone has to follow your example. I for one sure as hell don't. Can you not all agree to disagree :smt002 and get back to loving one another
No.. nor does it give the off lead people the right to say we are being mentally cruel to our dogs for not letting them off..Have you seen my dogs on the trampoline or the bouncy castle.. YUP mental cruelty.. totally! AND we know you are going to agree with Anne we have been through this
I think you'll find Brian that it's those who've advocated off lead excercise for Huskies in unenclosed areas that started being rude and provocative in the first place on this and another thread ;-) . I respect the opinions of those who walk their Huskies off lead, therefore I expect to be treated with the same kind of courtesy and respect back.
I hope that's not aimed at me mozzy because I've said time and time again there is nothing wrong with walking a Husky off lead in enclosed areas or exercising them by means of husky sports. What I've said is cruel is just exercising a Husky by doing on lead walks only.
after just reading this thread, this may sound stupid, but if a dog is on a long line (some have said 60ft) is that not more or less the same as being offlead? they still have that freedom, but its safe for them if they dont have a reliable recall?
Is this really old? I agree with Anneuk though, they need off lead freedom to fulfil their needs and have a good life. It also stops a lot of behaviour issues. Adam Btw an off lead dog can go as far as you want it to go, mine often go 50yrds to several 100yrds away depending on were we are. 60' feet is nothing.
HOw many can you clip together??? I have 30ft horse lunge lines..but when we go to the water..they get a couple clipped together so they can get out and swim.. I have to say..my dogs have a good recall..Cruiser's is fab..there is a video on here somewhere of him in an enclosed 5 aside pitch and I shout him back and he comes running ...BUT put that outside with smells and furry things and possible instant deafness...not a chance I am willing to take I'm afraid..
yes but you have collies... collies are an easyish breed to train... i dont think mals and collies are similar...
I think it depends. There is a world of difference between say, a Sibe and an Elkhound. My Elkhound went offlead and was reliable (ish) but having learned what i've learned from Sibe owners on this site, i don't think i'd risk it with one. We're hopefully getting a Mal soon, and i'll just do what I do with Dan now. Lunge lines are useful, as are tennis courts, working in harness and plenty of road work. I've had Dan out twice today as it's my day off. He had a run round a secure field this morning and a long walk on lead this aft. He's VERY happy btw and doesn't suffer for being on lead more that the other dogs I have. In my experience all the training in the world doesn't override instinct in a primitive breed so you have to be responsible and protect your dog from itself.
no you are a bully and abuser imo!! i LIVE with huskies their crosses and mal crosses ....your point being?
I have voted for on lead and off in unenclosed spaces and in harness though to be fair I'm playing a bit loose with 'in harness' as I mean in harness with the walky dog or bikejor attachment. Kismet huskamute is on long line most of the time due to her issues with some other dogs, but we have started having some off lead time in a muzzle twice a week at a social dog walk in a large woods as well as the bike runs. It works for us selkie the Samoyed has been offlead all her life, on lead only by roads etc. Her recall has always been excellent and she has been a happy free running girl for 14 years
