whats the differences between Utonagan's & NI's? in temprements & looks? as from what i read there breed from the same dogs? but look very different! Thanks
Hi Knottybabe just in case you don't get a lot of replies, if you read through this section I think you will find there are a number of threads on the same topic.
As far as I know the temprament seems very similar and you wont find any big differences there. I have heard of more Utes that will play fetch etc than NI...There are always exceptions to the rule though...but with my own NI they just arn't interested in toys outside of the home which may make finding ways to make walks fun slightly harder for people that are used to being able to play fetch etc! And that really is the only difference I have come across! Other than that to me it seems NI are generally bigger. You will find more long coat Utes than NI but both do have long and short coats in the breed. (I have both types with my NI) I truthly am just as interested in Utonagan as I am NI and I think if you find a good breeder of either and find the type that you like you will be just as well with either one. Always make sure that which ever was to be chosen, make sure the breeder is reputable and has carried out health tests etc etc
to me I think the NI's are usually heavier and bigger boned than the Utes. My 2 are not toy orientated at all, and the first toy I have ever seen them remotely interested in was the babble ball, however they are extremely food orientated, so I use bits of dog treat when training as rewards. As has already been said, there are several threads about it, so just read and make your own mind up.
Our two NIDs love their toys though we restrict them to toy play when we are out and about and sometimes when supervised in the garden (they like to destroy toys). One likes to play fetch the other doesn't (he prefers to run off with the toy). They will both retrieve when asked if they know they will get rewarded for it.
Ok well there are the two exceptions to the rule...I'm sure there's more...but anyway it's the only thing I could think of. Anymore anyone?
Please correct me if i'm wrong here guys, but my knowledge is they started off in the begining as the same breed, then split off in different directions due to difference in opinion in some of the more well established breeders/founders. I think due to this it will be some time down the line before there are many distinguishing features in the two, as at the moment they both seem very similar.
My little pup loves her toys (and everyone elses! ) The first week I got her I took her for her excercize during lunch break ay work and "pretended" to loose my keys and she found them for me.She loves picking up sticks and leaves and chasing them. She's a N,I by the way
My Northern Inuit Dogs are very 'pack' orientated. They condone any absentee's. Anyone leaving the said pack must be dealt with severely on their return with howls & nudges on coming home! Mother NI is very dominent and protective of her 'pack' (us) little un' (Tikaani) is shy without Alpha mum but loyal and devoted to us all. Toys are obsolete in our house apart from a kong. Pointless to requirements as far as they are concerned. Throw a stick in the river & they look at you like your insane. Why bother! But the loyalty, love, devotion & beauty of the dog has me captivated & everyone who meets them.
Hi . My lad (Utonagan) is really food orientated so training is easy but he has a stubborn streak and if he is hell bent on doing something it doesn't matter how much food you throw at him. He will run off after things, no matter how much we practice recall. He comes back though. Has an extremely high prey drive. He LOVES his toys - squeeky ones are a hit, things to shred and he loves to play fetch with a frisby and tug with a rope, t-towel; you name it . Enjoys lots of games, especially things like 'find'. Very mischievous and a total clown and not at all the calm dog I was expecting. Also contrary to what I expected he needs a lot of exercise - in particular off lead runs and he loves to chase, be chased and swim. Doesn't bark as a rule but has an expressive vocabulary consisting of howls and growls etc. Very affectionate, perceptive of moods, loving and fair-minded. Loves human company and hates being left alone. Very inquisitive and has to be involved in everything; even to the extent of sitting close and watching when we use power tools. Doesn't really like other dogs but ADORES people.
My 2 have a high prey drive, love to run about with some thing in their mouth, stick squeaky or ball, just sommit to carry they do chase it when thrown, love all other dogs even the ones that bite them Inka thinks this is a game when hes getting bitten, Kain tends to submit easily lies down till the offender goes off. They think they have to say hello to every thing. Inka loves to stand in water mud slime you name it the dirtier the better, never pass a puddle without going through it. A lot of fun and not a bad bone in either of their bodies, a pleasure to have.
Loki loves her balls and squeaky toys too Loves eating my trainers and boots also! One ball she has is all holes and she loves playing pull - she pulls - I tug!! Loves teddies as well! The Utes are a lovely breed, gentle and playful. Loves people and children and adores being admired by all who stop to talk to her Loki has more friends around here than I do - even amongst our police officers
