    16 dogs spared death by court

    SIXTEEN dogs placed on death row after a police amnesty on dangerous animals have been spared by a judge.

    A two-day hearing at Liverpool magistrates concluded with district judge Miriam Shelvey deciding that they should not be put down.

    People in the public gallery cheered at the decision and Judge Slevey was clapped out of court.

    During the hearing, the judge was shown family snaps, petitions, character references for dogs and owners, statements from dog trainers and letters from neighbours in support of the pets.

    Pamela Rose, representing most of the owners, had told the court: “All of these dogs are pets and all of my clients want their dogs back.

    “There is no evidence that any of these dogs constitutes a danger under the legis- lation. Some of these dogs were extremely friendly and easy to manage.”

    James Clark was in court to represent Chief Constable Bernard Hogan-Howe as Merseyside police applied for destruction orders for the dogs under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.

    Mr Clark said police had become increasingly worried about dangerous dogs on Merseyside and an amnesty ran between February 7 and 13 to try to get dangerous dogs them off the streets of Merseyside. He referred to the fatal mauling of Ellie Lawrenson, aged five, in St Helens on New Year’s Day.

    Mr Clark told the court that most of the owners in court were responsible pet lovers who had co-operated with the police and handed their dogs in voluntarily.

    Two specialist police dog examiners inspected all the dogs and identified them all as pit bull types. They also gave their views on the animals’ temperaments during examination in court.

    I hadn't realised that the police had actually applied for a destruction order on these dogs.
    Thank goodness the Judge saw fit to ignore that.

    I'm still not clear have they got to wear muzzles or anything at all like that?

    Apparently they have 4 weeks to comply with the exemption register of the DDA with regards to neutering, microchipping, tatooing and whatever else they have to do including the muzzling and on a lead.

    at last! good news! the police tried to charge the owners kennel fees for the time they were away from home???? lol the Judge refused the request! lol good on her I say!

    Fantastic news for the ones coming home :)

    But please don't ever forget Cassie and the others who never had the chance to have 'their day in court' because their owners were bullied and lied to and misled.

    May this NEVER happen again, a battle is won but there is still a long way to go
