    SBT & WHT Cohabiting Question

    Hi,

My wife and I have just moved from rented accommodation where we were not allowed to have a dog to our own place. We're now finally in a position to be able to get the dogs we've wanted for some time. My wife wants to get a West Highland Terrier and I want to get a SBT.

I've read conflicting information about STB cohabiting with other dogs.

Whats the general consesnus here? Is it a bad idea to raise a Staffy with another dog? Would you advise against it? Would like to here peoples views on this so I can make an informed decision.

Both the wife and I work, though we both do one (different)day a week from home and plan to pay a dog walker on the days when we're not home. Do you think this is acceptable for a dog like a staffy which is so owner/people orientated.

    Sorry to ramble on!

Each dog is different I have Stafford's, Welsh Terriers and a Lakeland Terrier. And two cats.

The main instigator of any trouble is the welsh terrier bitch.
She is OK with the older male Stafford's as they just ignore her.
Stafford's tend to be fine so long as they see the other dog as part of their family, but don't forget the westie is a terrier.
Either way I would not leave them together when you are not there and can you deal with them if they don't get on. If the westie starts it the Stafford will finish it

I think if you get both dogs from puppies there should not be a problem. My staffie loves all dogs which is just from me having her around other dogs her best friend is my mums little chihuhua:grin:. But i do agree staffs will always finish a fight and i think they get a bit of bad rep because of this even if someone elses dog starts it a staff will finish it thus a bad reputation:-(

    I agree with this,
Generally Staffords do not go looking for trouble, they can live in harmony with other dogs, but you have to remember the potential for a fight is always there.
We have Two Staffords opposite sexes, and a rescue Ess,(Castrated)under no circumstances would they ever be left together unsupervised. We have had a few fights, but they have settled down now.
A Stafford if challenged will not back down and sometimes all it takes is a stare from another dog.

My post is a bit late in the day, but I thought I`d do one anyway. I bought a Staffordshire bitch & a Bull Terrier male. I organised to pick them up on the same day & they haven`t hardly spent any time seperate from one another. Whenever one has growled at the other they have immediately been given a major telling off & put out side till I`ve deemed they can come back in.
We haven`t treated them like babies, so they`re in no doubt about who is boss (though they still get plenty of fuss). Set your stall out as you mean to carry on & there shouldn`t be any problems.
Don`t mistake rough & noisy play for a fight or aggression.
There will only be problems if you cause them, monitor your own behaviour as much as your dogs & there will very little hassle.

I do not see why you couldnt get a Westie bitch and a Stafford male or the other way around, if you are new to the staffords then i would go for different sexes as 2 males or 2 bitchs are more likely to fight.
