I asked you for your opinion on why YOU think it's right to descriminate against certain breeds.

Will you please explain this 'fighting' dog fascination you have?

People always mention 'fighting' dogs, but never mention the breeds.
Once you do some research, you'll find these so called 'fighting' dogs weren't bred for 'fighting'.
It's HUMANS that made the dogs fight, and took the dogs away from their original purpose.

And again, the reason the dogs were banned was because HUMANS made the dogs do these things.
NOT because of anything the dogs themselves decided to do.

Just caught up with this thread again. Hevvur, I think you're exactly right. Certain breeds were used for fighting in the past but this doesn't always mean they were bred specifically to fight. Humans get on my nerves sometimes because as soon as something doesn't fit in with their our of life or as mentioned, as soon as 'we have no place for them anymore', we want to get rid. It's wrong.

Staffs are known to have been used in the fighting 'industry' but they are also known as the Nanny dog because they can be so good with kids. Should we ban Staffs? Akitas were bred to hunt and were then used in the fighting 'industry'. They are now a national treasure in it's country of origin and would apparently watch over the children whilst the mothers would be working in the fields. Should we ban Akitas?

Suze, I dont think that you have researched the term "fighting dogs" and actually realise what this exactly entails. If you mean, breeds originally bred to fight, then that encompasses a lot more than the four breeds included in the DDA. The fact that they were originally bred for this purpose does not make them inately more likely to attack humans, in fact it is more the opposite. "Fighting dogs" that showed any human aggression were not bred from, or pts, as these dogs lived within the family home, and needed to be trusted not to turn on their owner when in the ring.

When you say, they have it in their blood, what exactly do you mean by that? They have it in them to attack children? What does their original breeding have to do with that? Were they bred to attack young children in the pit? Think about what you are posting before posting one liners with little reason or explanation for your opinion. If that indeed is your opinion, back it up, rather than coming out with vague comments such as its in their blood.

Blanket bans on breeds lacks common sense, the DDA was brought in in 1991. The dog that attacked ellie was 1 year old, is that an effective law? Now if the law targeted the irresponsible owner, then the dog (which had attacked a close relative prior to the incident) would not have been alive, and would not have been left alone with a child.

I have a gsd and we are very very careful when she is in the back garden we have a six foot fence totally secure but my husband didnt lock the gate behind him ONCE and she got out, ( i am not a careless owner) i was terrified incase anything happened to her and ran around for an hour in my nightie looking for her, luckily we are in a reasonably quite quiet village. when i found her she was so pleased to see me, she had frightened herself as she had never been out alone. its is more worrying reading this article. I would sell my house and relocate rather than allow my dog to be destroyed.
I can understand non dog lovers being against most breeds of dogs and classing certain breeds as fighting / guarding but it frightens me reading these comments on a site full of dog lovers.
I think every dog should be judged as an individual, my shepherd is a lovely friendly dog although very excitable and people will move away from her and ask if she is friendly before patting her (good thing) but my crossbread Remus is 14 about collie sized and people just come straight up and pat him and assume he is friendly, he is a rescue dog who was abused and is very nervy so looks are very decieving. Pauline x

ANY dog can 'have it in them' to bite, lets not forget 99.9% of dogs bite for a reason, this fails to get mentioned when dog attacks are reported. Pit Bulls were banned in a knee jerk reaction without much of a vaild reason, any dog can bite, and any dog whatever the breed can do much damage, especially to children.

Thats rubbish, have you checked out the bite statistics for your own breed and then compared them to the 'fighting' dogs you seem to keep mentioning, most of the dogs that have 'fighting history' have a 100% pass rate. Like I said Collies fail pretty miserably! (Not that I personally have anything against them, I owned a Collie x)

The same could be said for Collies, they are one of the worst offenders according to dog bite statistics.

Every dog breed is different, no breed has it in them to bite, it's all down to early socialisation and how much time you are willing to put into your dog, no dog is born nasty, whatever the breed.

What a shame that you wear rose tinted specs and not see the breeds for what they are, instead of believing all the nonsense that the press and media hype up.

So you are targeting the wrong end of the lead!

I am not going to get into a long drawn out argument with you for two reasons Suze.

    1) You don't know what you are talking about.

    2) You have to have a reason behind your opinion.Yes you are right everyone is entitled to an opinion, but most people know why they have that opinion.BSL is not the way forward and targeting the wrong end of the lead is only going to bring further trouble.

    yes i agree with that

it will bring more trouble - it will start banning other breeds that it is not necessary to ban

personally i think they should stick to the 4 breeds they ahve banned - and keep up with the banning of them -0 and crosses off them etc -

but ban no other breeds - it should be the deed not the breed (to all other dogs except the 4 banned ones)

But what have any of the banned breeds done that is so different from anu other breed Suze? How many Dogos have attacked over here compared to say Labs? But no one would dream of putting them on a banned list.(including me) How many Pits??? How many Tosa's There just was no need for the DDA to go beyond the "ANY DOG DANGEROUSLY OUT OF CONTROL" part, imo.

:? how about not banning any actual breed just do every dog individually! a dog is a dog, a living animal no matter what breed it is!
i know lets ban stupid people then there won't be a problem :?

this thread just goes to show how hard it is to change a supposed dog lovers mind!:smt021 imagine how hard it is to change the minds of people who don't even like animals:cry:
it's a one big struggle but at least if 1 person reading this thread changes they're mind about the breed it's a job well done!
