I have recently got a Utonagan from a rescue centre. Can anyone give me some advice as he is nuts he hardly ever stops. If he is'nt running about throwing his toys in the air he's nudging your arm for attention. Apparently he is from the West Welsh Borders and was worm burdened and covered in fleas when he was removed from his previous owner. I also have a 6 yr old Boxer who thinks he is a puppy again and they have bonded really quickly. They eat together, sleep together and fly through the house together like a whirlwind.
Hi Hazel Have you any info on him at all, ie. his original name or where he came from. You could try going onto The Utonagan Dog Club site and putting his picture in the chat forum as someone may recognise him, also most of the breeders and committee people, and also of course owners go on.
The rescue centre think his name was obrian. Because i am fostering him at the moment they cany give me any info. He has a longish coat and his colour is grey and he is about 6 months.
think I know who he is. Utonagans normally behave as you describe when they are babies, they are very slow maturers, so they have big bodies and very tiny brains!!! They need to be kept occupied as much as possible. E mail me if you want any other info
Hi hazel.miles I appreciate that as a foster parent you have to be careful with what you say. Please feel free to email me at -- if you could let me have a photograph of obrian (mojo) i would really appreciate it.
Utes are quite boisterous when they're young. They seem to have endless energy. All they ever seem to want to do is play. Utes adore attention, more the better. Luca (my dog) is always wanting attention, even to the point of pushing the other two out of the way to get it :-( Thier behaviour does settle down eventually (although no-one seems to of told Luca that ) Lots of exercise with play training usually gets rid of some of the excess energy
This name rings a bell ...might be a Twatha but I'm not sure. You could try contacting Nadia and seeing if she recognises the name. Poor mite, I wonder what happened to him and why he didn't go to Utonagan rescue? I only have experience of one Ute but as a pup he was very mischievous (still is!) and very intelligent and needed/needs lots of mental AND physical stimulation - he soaks up training. Try activating him with treat training, games of fetch, tug (teach him 'leave' and 'finish' if you do this one), find (hiding treats and getting him to find them) ... etc. Lots of walks too.
piccie please? you allowed to do that?? we love photos on here!! sorry to hear about his sad condition
