What age do they mature ? Are they mad or quite laid back ? Is there working lines in the UK or is there a split in the breed like there is other gundogs ? Bascially I'd like to know all I can, I saw a pair on the weekend one wirehaired and the other had a normal coat and from what I have seen of them they are quite a lovely dog
Well Idont own a Vizsla, but I have a few friends who do, and one breeds them .......first I dont think you will get different lines working or show, not like labs,I also have a freind who works hers, but they came from a show breeder........in saying that if you watched them in the ring, you will see a variaty of shapes and sizes, many not fitting the breed standard, but that is the trouble , when a dog becomes popular very quickly, , I have been following them around the show ring for about 5yrs know, and when my friend started to show them you would only get 5 in a class , 6 or 7 if you where lucky, all looking much of a muchness, but if you watch to day you can see up to 25 in a class, to much to soon i think, back to the temperament , they are lovely dogs, happy friendly, people loving , they love their families, are a sensitve breed , some will say they are very highly stung, but i have not seen this, they do need plenty of exersice, (same as any gundog) The wire haired is slightly heavier in build, and also a little more laid back in attitude, but either nake a lovely pet, If I had to choose the wire haired would be for me.
Hi Willow, I have had Vizslak since 1990, both from pups and rescues. I love the breed, actually I love most breeds but I have a particular fondness for my Vizzies and Dobes, not forgetting old Ben, elderly Lab. The Vizsla is very much a multi-purpose gundog, and as you know part of the HPR sub group. They are a very sensitive breed and would be easily ruined by heavy handed or rough treatment. In my opinion not suited to outdoor/kennel life as they are very people orientated. They are excellent around other dogs, people and children. The short coated need hardly any special grooming, just a rub down with a rubber mitt regularly and if you had a Viz like mine, regular baths as they both roll in muck!! I have not had Wire haired but believe they are also low maintenance too when it comes to grooming. Nova is 13 yrs old and Tally 6 yrs, I lost Tern at 14 yrs, Rory at 15.5 yrs and my beloved Kes at 11.5 yrs, I felt cheated as Kes died young. There is an incidence of epilepsy in the breed, indeed Kes was diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy at the age of 3. The average hip score for HV is 13. There are some breeders who like to sell their pups mainly for working but there is not really a divide in the breed as there is in Labradors and Springers although some have more of a working instinct than others. My Kes was very good, however her litter sister, Tern, was only interested in eating - certainly not working or training of any sort!! Their bloodlines harkened back to mainly Galfrid/Russetmantle and Oroshaza lines whose breeders mainly bred for working. Tally is Galfrid, Nova is Cragvallie and Rory was Saline(also working lines) The breed has changed over the years as with most things, when I first bought Kes and Tern many of the Vizslak being shown were small and dark but now they seem to be more leggy and certainly lighter in colour. In June I attended a Vizsla funday and found that Tally was the only one there who was small and dark yet just by looking at her the majority of peolpe knew her bloodlines. They are sensitive dogs who easily sense the mood of their owners, always pleased to see you whether you leave them for 10 mins or 2 hours. They mouth you gently around the wrist, not hard, but it is the nature of the breed to do it, and they make little vizzie noises too when pleased to see you. The downside of this breed is that they can be very destructive if left for long periods, they are really not suitable to be left alone all day. I am in most of the time with mine and they get approx 2 hrs free running every night, even Nova at 13 manages the walk but just mooches along now now instead of doing every thing at 100 miles per hour!! Last night she jumped a small fence (about 18" high) which really surprised me as I think she is looking frail but she obviously thought she could do it. You can expect to pay approximately £750 - 850 for a puppy nowadays. Vizsla Rescue do not get many through their rescue organisation, not like Lab, Springer, GSP rescues etc. I think I have covered most things, if you need to know anything else please ask, only too willing to tell you how wonderful the breed is.
Hi, we have a Wire and a Smooth Vizsla, the are as different as chalk and cheese, the Smooth is very bombproof and not very bright but very ameniable to change etc, the Wire is a much more reserved dog, very intelligent, excellent worker, but a bit skitty some times. In the show ring, quite a few of the Wires are nervy to say the least. Here are a few of pics of them..
Well the one we found and took in for the night (till the owners came to get him) didn't stop wriggling!
I have a friend has both, I was at crufts with her last year and her wire haired boy got 3rd in his class at just 18 months. The wire is more skitty, excitible in general the smooth seems to be a little more laid back, but both are similar to the Weimy and are very sensitive to their surroundings. They need proper upbringing and socialisation to be a well adjusted adult as they take things to heart more so than other breeds. They are very people orientated and loyal dogs. Attention seeking and don't being left on their own and can be highly strung so they need someone who knows what they are doing. Not a first time dog for sure. Like the Weimy they are often both worked and shown, and show and working lines run well together unlike most gundogs these days, which is what I like about these breeds. They do need a canny bit of excersize and mental stimulation, and will wreck havoc on your house if they get bored. They are very lively and active dogs. I'll put up some pictures of my friends' wire once I ask permission to post them.
Our Smooth is a Galfrid..she did well in the ring (not the field..didnt like Grouse! ..or mud..or wet!!) but she has severe HD as well as OCD in her shoulders and DJD.:-( .she is only 6y old and copes fine, she doesnt get long, long walks anymore and she wears a special jumper so that she doesnt get chilled...her life ultimately will be cut short because of her problems, we had her spayed as soon as the HD etc came to light.
I've only ever met 2 and both were smooth, they were gorgeous and friendly but incapable of keeping still for a second
Tally is Galfrid Dance out of Galfrid Night and by Galfrid Quentin born 05/03/2000. Sorry to hear of your girls problems. Touch wood tally is fit and well (also spayed!), I have had other Vizzies, one of which was epileptic and had a bad heart, she still lived until she was 11.5 but her sister went on until she was turned 14. I felt cheated losing Kes when I did. I also had a Saline dog, Rory, he was by SH Ch Chantilly Jester, and a right cantankerous old devil he was too. I loved that dog though!!! TALLY - GALFRID DANCE
Alexandra..we are taking a litter from our Wire later this year, we are planning on putting her to a working dog, who is also KC registered, you can PM me if you would like any further details.
