Hi, I am new on here and I would just like to say to Doodles that i have a puppy from the same lady as you. I liked her and am extreamly happy with my bundle of fun. I had a Bernise mid 90's and have been to frightened to have another purebreed since as he died 16 months old from a heart attack after comming out of anethsetic. I will stick with crosses as i feel more comfortable. I can say people are charging the earth out there for purebreeds and this lady certainly was not out to make money.:p

Hi and welcome to this site, just to let you know this thread is over 5 years old now and i'm not sure if doodles is still a member, I hope your pup brings you years of happiness, what a sad thing to have happened to your pedigree while still a baby :-(

The Loughlander is not an "Accidental" breeding. They have been bred for several years by this breeder.

    mistee and Azz like this.
Hello, I have a nine month old Loughlander. I also own a four year old Bernese Mountain Dog. The breeder does not have any puppies at the moment but has been breeding the Loughlander for many years. She is a registered Bernese Mountain Dog and Newfoundland Dog breeder. She is also a Crufts Show Judge. Unfortunately they do not have a connection to the internet yet.

Hi i’m interested in the breeder who produced loughlanders. I’ve wanted a bernese for many years and spoke with her around ten years ago. I know crossbreeding is frowned upon by many but i would like a dog who has a good chance of longevity with the bernese and newfy characteristics. Several folk have recently recommended golden mountain dogs, a cross with golden retreiver. I am looking into these also. I’ve studied mountain dog breeds for many years. Does anyone know if Sue Curle Lane the loughlander breeder still breeds dogs? I have respect for those who know their stuff as long as they breed for good reasons, cross or otherwise. Any contact details to help in my search.

None of the folks on this thread have been around in a long time so odds are you won't get a response about any breeder.

Honestly, I would start looking at rescues and shelters. Many breed rescues will take in mixed breeds. My prior boy, Moose-dog, and his siblings were pulled from a local shelter by a rescue. I adopted him from the rescue at 8 weeks. He was a shepherd-newfie-poodle mix. He had the skinny build of the poodle, but his temperament was a good mix between the shepherd and newfie. He lived to be 15 years. I love newfies - with Moose-dog, I got the temperament and personality without the health issues.

I would not buy a crossbreed. No reputable breeder will breed them or allow their dogs be used as stud dogs, etc, so you WILL be buying from a lower quality bloodline and that means more health issues even with the cross breeding.

Also, with crossbreeds, you don't know what traits will passed down to the puppies. Each puppy will get different random traits from the parents. So you may end up with the bernie health issues due to size and the higher cancer rate of the golden and have a dog that lives less than a purebred bernie.

I can't see how crossing Newfies with BMD's would add a great deal to their lifespan, as Newfies, (along with most other giant breeds), only average 8-10 years.
How about a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog? Essentially a smooth coated Berner, with an estimated lifespan of 10-12 years.
My Goldens lived for 10-14 years. The 10 year old male had a heart problem, and both the 14 y.o.'s (girls) had different cancers. The only crossbreed that I have seriously considered owning was one of the Golden x Border Collie lines for competition obedience. Bred in the Nottingham area, they had the affixes Retcoll and Coltriever. Strong attractive dogs, but I don't know whether these affixes are still active.
