I am curious. While walking your dog(s), do you put bags of "bathroom business" in someone else's garbage bin? If the bin is out on the street/at the curb, of course - I don't mean walking onto their property.
I do not walk my dogs off my property to do their business. They do their business in my yard before I walk or drive them anywhere. If we are out and they go, I carry the bag to a public bin. The only time I drop it in a private bin is if there are no public bins around AND someone is outside to whom I can ask permission. With all that, if someone put a tied bag in my bin, whether on the street or in my driveway (where they sit), I would not mind unless they were doing it daily. In that case, I think they need to have their dog poop in their own yard and not near or in mine regardless of whether they pick it up. I just really don't get this necessity that people have to take their dogs to other people's property to potty. Not everyone wants dogs peeing on their trees or pooping on the sidewalk in front of their house where their kids play, etc. I see it at campgrounds too - people will walk their dogs to neighboring campsites and have them poop right at the edge. Even picked up, there is a lingering odor that those campers have to put up with afterwards while the dog owner goes back to their nonsmelly campsite.
My dog(s) are encouraged to use the gravelled dog loo area in my garden, before setting off on a walk, or going in a car. Despite this, Tally always 'goes' on her walk. In woodland I would try to, 'stick and flick', into the undergrowth wherever possible, but on footpaths or parkland I always bag and carry to a bin. We are fairly well supported with red dog poo bins in this area, but it is acceptable to use any public council bin if there isn't a red bin nearby. I would never use a householder's bin. Although I wouldn't mind if anyone put a bagged item in mine, I would understand if a non dog owner became annoyed at having dog poo put into their bin.
Myself, and most people I know, are mainly walking dogs for exercise and fun. Bags are taken just in case the dog happens to potty. Even if someone is primarily walking the dog so that he/she can potty, many owners try to curb their dog away from someone's yard. Sidewalks are questionable because they are not actually part of someone's private property. An owner should still pick up the poop, yes, but the resident(s) of a nearby house can't always dictate what is allowed on a sidewalk.
I wouldn’t put it in someone else’s bin if he happened to go on a path, I would carry it to the nearest public bin, some people can take offence of you using their bins here. But mine would go in the morning before we go out, in the afternoon he will do it while we are walking but usually on grass so I pick it straight up and use the nearest bin. Never on someone else’s lawn though. It is law here and you can get fined depending where you are for not having waste bags if walking your dog/s in public places, the same as not picking it up
I've seen and known many dog owners who believe potty time means walking the dog through the neighborhood. And more often than not, the dog is allowed to poop on others' property - whether it's a poop at the edge of the lawn or peeing on someone's tree. And, if the homeowner asks them to stop letting their dog go there, the dog owner gets mad and defensive rather than simply not letting their dog go there anymore. There's a reason Amazon sells yards signs that say "No poop", etc. Because too many people allow their dogs to pee/poop on others' property. I've also known people who will let their dog poop right in front of their next door neighbor's yard and put the bag in the neighbor's bin instead of walking it the 50 feet to their own bin. I have had people tell me they "never do this" and two minutes later they are doing it. And then we dog owners wonder why other people get frustrated and dogs get banned from so many places and neighbors get upset when they see dogs walking by. Sure, sometimes a dog has to go when out on a walk. And in that case, you direct them to an out of the way spot on public property (eg, the gutter rather than the sidewalk proper), bag it, and take it to a public bin OR carry it home. I've been known to carry a bag of poop home in the car 60+ miles because there wasn't a public bin away from where people were hanging out and/or eating. Walking in a neighborhood, I would carry the bag to a public bin or home, or ask if someone is outside and if they say no not get offended. On a down and back trail, I have been known to leave the bag at the side of the trail and pick it up on the way back - I always use brightly colored bags for this reason. On a one way or circular trail, I use one of those baggy holders attached to my leash to carry the poop the entire way. Many of our trails don't have bins out here. To me, it's just common decency. I love my animals, but I get that others don't. I do what I can to minimize the negative effect my animals have on others.
It would be unacceptable here to allow your dog to poop on anyone's garden, or even on the pavement. Farmers worry about fouling on pasture land as it can lead to cows aborting. The majority of folk are aware that allowing your dog to foul without removing it is illegal, and are well prepared to deal with any accidents. I have seen an occasional person pretend not to notice what is happening, (these are usually elderly and male). This thread reminds me that when on an outing a couple of weeks ago, I discovered that I had no poo bags in my pocket! All I had was a cloth handkerchief and a tissue. I decided to use the tissue, which only just met around the Beagle sized offering. There were no bins, so I ended up carrying it for what felt like a mile until I found a suitable receptacle. I couldn't wait to get home and wash my hands.
I hate that! I got tired of those things happening, so I now have one of each of these attached to each leash handle: The second holds the bag of poop so you don't have too. I also keep a couple rolls of baggies in my purse, my belt pack, and my camera bag and several rolls in the car. I also carry several of these in each my purse, belt pack, camera bag and car. Great for washing off your hands and for wiping up any leftover if the stool is a bit soft. When camping, there is always THAT camper who walks their dog to the edge of everyone else's campsite to poop even though they could walk a few steps into the forest behind their own site where no one would be subject to it.
We have a poop smearing person the regularly brings their dog around near us and the amount of people that has commented and questioning on who it is, I have my suspicions as to who, it funnily enough only happens when one person which has a large dog comes around this way when they can’t get down by the river because of flooding after heavy rain, but it is disgusting as when the dog has done it they have put their foot in the middle of it and then just wiped the foot round so no one can pick it up, it’s all very well but children use the field to play or run around and if they fall and land in it I dread to think if the consequences, no one can actually catch them doing it and I dread to think what their boots smell like.
@Toedtoes I am usually prepared, and do have those devices on the Flexi handle. I don't have them on my training leads though - too cumbersome. I usually carry several knotted black bags, but on that occasion I had changed into a 'best' jacket without checking whether there were any bags in the pocket - I'm so used to them being there!
