    Puppy vaccination advice

    Good morning all,
We have a 11 week old Frenchie that we picked up at 8 weeks old. She’s a right character and bonding well with our staffy.

She had her 1st vaccination done at vets4pets and all went smoothly. However we took her for her 2nd jab also at vets4pets but it was a different vet. She said what she was vaccinated for her 1st round wasn’t correct and only partially covers her. She done the 2nd jab but told us we have to wait 2 weeks to go out for walks and come back in 4 weeks for a booster.

This doesn’t seem right to me, is it just to get more money from us?
I usually use a private vet, and when our staffy had her 2nd puppy jabs we only had to wait a week and she was ok to go for walks.

We want to get her socialised as soon as possible, but obviously don’t want to put her at risk.
Would it be ok to take her out after waiting 1 week rather than 2?
    Kind regards

Hello Nathan and welcome to Breedia :039:

I am afraid that I cannot advise you as I do not know what the protocol for vaccinations are where you are, and I do not remember when I could take my previous two puppies out after their shots. My current dog could not even go into the front yard for quite a while as we have loose and stray dogs around and there was Parvo in the area. She was very small though so I was able to take her out and get used to people and noises by carrying her in a bag until it was safe.

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than I regarding the protocol will be around soon, see your question and be able to advise you. It is rather quiet at the moment due to the time of year but I am sure someone will be able to help you shortly.

Please post some pictures to share with us! :)

The vet isn't trying to get extra money from you.
Puppies carry a level of immunity from their mothers which can interfere with the cover provided by the vaccine. The ideal would be to titre test the puppy's blood and only vaccinate when this natural immunity has waned, but this is not practical when the puppy is moving to a new home where it will be in contact with other pets and traces of potential infection from human feet. The breeder will not normally vaccinate the puppy that they are keeping back before 10 weeks - and so will just need the 2 shots.
The most recent injection your puppy has had will confer vaccine immunity, which will then be boostered by the one that follows. I think the vet is correct in saying that you really should allow two weeks quarantine after that one, but I must confess that I don't leave it that long. Depending on the area where you live, I would carry the puppy and allow her to meet people, see traffic, and experience daily activities. I wouldn NOT put puppies down on pavements, or areas that are frequented by other dogs, but can't see any harm in having them on a loose lead in a friends garden, for example.

Thank you both for the warm welcome and replies :)
CaroleC it just confused us as both vets gave us different answers. The 1st vet said she just needed her 2nd jab and then wait a week, but the 2nd said we had to wait 2 weeks and have a 3rd jab. Even though they work at the same place o_O

    Aww - she is gorgeous!

Looks like she is happy in her crate - does she scrabble up her bedding to make a nest as my dog does?

I think it is best to err on the side of caution. I picked up a puppy at the airport and 12 hours later, in the middle of the night, we were at the emergency vets. He had parvovirus. He almost didn’t make it, was a sack of bones when I brought him home 8 days later, and the bill was over $5000, and they discounted a bunch of it as well. The puppy, the larger one in my pic, suffered horribly, he had two IV’s running into him, and it was extremely hard on me emotionally as well. Best to be safe, you don’t want her, or you, to go through that.

She is a beaut, and is full of attitude lol. She gives our staffy a run for her money.
She’s very happy in her crate, and now that she is dry though the night we got her a little cave bed that she loves to snuggle in

Yes, that is odd and might be worth clarifying with the practice manager. Usually there is a set protocol that they all follow. Do they employ locum vets perhaps?

After her 3rd jab I won’t be going back there. The 1st vet was really nice and was giving Mabel a right fuss, second vet not so much. Very clinical.

Mabel's crate looks to be a bit bigger than Tikva has, hers was the smallest one the store had, and she has two padded mats that fit the base, and a half size fluffy padded sleeping mat at the sleeping end. She always curls up to sleep on the sleeping mat but frequently if she changes position during the night she scrabbles it, and one of the larger mats to make more of a nest, or just scrabbles the sleeping mat to make a pillow!

It is quite a large one as it was originally brought for our staffy, but no longer uses it, we make sure it’s really nice and cosy for her with her bed and blankets and like you a padded mat. I also put in a t shirt that I have worn that day for some comfort at night. Although it won’t be long until she’s on the bed too lol

My previous two dogs slept on the bed with me but Tikva was too small and too young. The mats that fit the base of her crate are 60cm x 44cm and the sleeping pad is half that size. When I bought her home, a few weeks before I expected to, I lined the crate with a puppy pee pad and she just had the sleeping pad, a very soft blankie [also 60x44cm] which I folded to put on the pad, plus the soft shirt I had been wearing when I brought her home and a couple of my previous dogs soft toys.

Once she was dry all night she obviously did not need the pee pad but for a while I still lined her crate with one but put the full size soft mats in on it - she does likes her comfort! She can stretch out full length in it so it is plenty big enough for her - and she is always happy to go in it at night. No shirt or soft toys needed now though!

The full size padded mats and the sleeping ones are lovely and soft, reversible, and go in the washing machine and dryer.

Your pooches sound as spoilt as mine lol. Mabel is dry through the night now but like yourself still have a pad in there just in case. I’m thinking of getting her a smaller crate now so she feels extra snug and secure. She absolutely adores her new cave bed and loves to be snuggled up in it lol. It’s useful for her when she is in her pen rather than crate.
My washing machine has never been used so much as it has been recently lol

    Mabel is just adorable! :049:

Tikva is not spoiled...,,,...as long as she gets her own way! Seriously though she fits in with my situation and I would not change anything about her - well, I could sometimes do without the running commentary from her telling me what is going on outside! :005:

thank you :) I’d love to see a picture of Tikva
    They are funny aren’t they.
Lilly my staffy is my shadow. She follows me everywhere, and we have been through so much together. She’s my best friend.
Mabel is such a diva but also extremely loving. I can’t wait to watch her grow

This picture of Tikva was taken couple of years ago but she has not changed at all - and I still get the stink-eye and ears back when she has not gotten her own way!

I actually got my camera out earlier today and took some more pictures but for some unknown reason my computer does not recognise my camera [a Canon] so I am going to have to get onto my computer guy and ask for his help. She is just over 5½ years old now, weighs ~7.5kg and is a Dachshund/Minpin cross.
