Thought I would start a post for my other pup. We were told he's full blooded lab but the vet (and my eyes lol) said he's mixed with something. One said maybe sharpei and another said perhaps chow or possibly pit but if so very small bc his head isn't boxy. What do you all think? Anyone see anything that stands out?
What stands out? He is a lovely looking puppy, that is what stands out! I can see Lab in him but not pure Lab and I have no idea what he is mixed with. But does it really matter? Love him for who he is, not what he is.
It matters bc I would like to read about the temperament of whatever type he is as well as any outstanding health details etc (same as for my other dog), as far as getting rid of them if they aren't such and such breed then no it doesn't matter but just for that reason is why
Unless you know what a dog’s breed mix is for sure, ie: you know the parents, speculating about the possible breed mix is just that speculation. People can only guess what breeds might be in the mix, and mostly they will give different answers, unless it has a pedigree, one really can’t look at a dog and know reliably whether it’s a Lab, or not based on visual looks. If you are worried about the temperament/ health details etc: Then you should have got a purebred.
A sweet puppy, but, as you say, definitely a Lab cross. No idea with what - something with a high ear set, possibly a terrier type.
The temperament of a dog has more to do with how they are brought up and socialised as a pup, than what breed/breeds they are. Health? Some breeds are more susceptible to certain health problems, which does not mean that they will develop any of those problems. Pereg, the one in my avatar, was a mutt of unknown origin. Her dam was also a mutt - a pregnant street dog also of no known origin, who was lucky enough to be rescued by an organisation and fostered until her puppies were weaned and could be adopted. So I have no knowledge of what breeds might been in Pereg's background - she was a mutt. A much loved mutt. But she developed epilepsy and there was no way I could have traced that back as her background was unknown. My current little booga is a mixed breed - an accidental mating between a Dachshund maiden dam and Minpin sire. Not breeds I would have chosen as both have epilepsy as one of their health problems. Is there any guarantee that a pup will have known temperament problems even if it is a pure-bred? No. It depends on how the pup is brought up and socialised. Is there any guarantee that a pup will not have any health problems even if it is pure-bred? No. Because who knows what problems might be in the background of sire and dam and then appear in a pup generations later.
I believe that the core temperament is mostly genetic and is inherited, not developed, when bred the genetic temperament is what will be passed on. Some behaviors can be managed through training/socialising, but only within the limits set by genetics.
