Hi John, you will need to narrow it down a bit. What about coat length? A trimmed breed, or a low maintenance coat? How much training and exercise are you prepared to do? This is UK forum, so you are likely to get KC reg. breeds suggested?
If you want a energetic smaller dog and don't mind coat then I will always suggest a Papillon, they are the only small breed I like. Otherwise maybe a Cirneco Dell'etna, a Basenji or a terrier breed depends on what kind of personality you like in a dog.
you could visit your local Dogs's Trust or other local rescue's and tell them you're looking for a small dog and see what they have in if you're not fussy whether it's a crossbreed or not. They should know the dogs personalities to be able to match you with a little buddy!
