    Advice needed on puppy behaviour

Hi all I hope there's owners of the breed can help please as i'm going to be new to the breed ...we have owned many breeds over the years but this would be our first Shar pei ..we have chosen a puppy we hoped was to be perfect for our family of a french bulldog girl & 3 house cats my husband & myself ...our concerns on visiting our future baby at 6 weeks old we were concerned with his behaviour to other litter mates ..ie humping them all & being aggressive in play is this usual for the breed ? as it was constant humping ...also we were concerned the breeder was only weaning them on dog biscuits soaked no meat surely they should be on proper high protein puppy food ...is this usual as we voiced our concern lastly the coat we stressed as new owners our preference to coat type having a son in his late 20's with severe eczema that we wanted a brush or bear coats our son doesnt live with us but felt this was the coats for us we were assure the pup we chose was a brush coat yet he doesnt look it but were not experienced to know ...please can someone advice are we unduly concerned to behaviour & feeding

I'm not a doctor but I pretend to be one on the internet
and Ive never heard of dog fur having ANYthing to do with eczema.
Ive had really bad eczema as a child, I mean really bad,
and the boxers' fur had nothing to do with outbreaks of the skin disease.
Now I have one of the furriest dog breeds around,
and there is no effect whatsoever upon my now-healed skin.
Fact is, eczema has more to do with dry skin than any
environmental factors. tell him to take lots of vitamin E
and to add olive oil to many of his foods, and to stop washing with
hot water, and to not rub his skin with a towel, but to dab instead.

as per the shar pei, thats a pretty scary breed in my opinion.
they are ruthless family protectors. they dont get along too well
with other dogs, and I wouldnt be surprised if they automatically would kill cats.
Be careful of the shar pei, tough dog to take care of.

    good luck in any event

As a Shar-Pei owner I'll try to answer your questions one by one.

Re : The humping/aggression. First of all no 6 week old puppy is aggressive and similarly humping isn't due to sexual desire but over excitement! If you've never seen Pei puppies play before then it can look quite horrifying. The only way I can describe it is that it's like watching a Rugby match with loads of scrums and tackles throughout the game! When you get him home just watch he doesn't become too excited and rough and when he does call a halt to his game!

Re : The food. You don't mention what brand of dry food the breeder's feeding, but it is quite normal for not only Pei but many other breeds of puppies to initially be fed exclusively on dry food. Because they're a fast growing breed, from 8 weeks old a Pei should be fed on ADULT food. Mine is given Acana Grasslands which is grain free, mixed with some 100% pure meat wet food. Brit True Lamb, Beef or Rabbit Bits is my favourite. Several times a week she's also given "home cooked" food of meat, poultry, fish mixed with a selection of light;y boiled fresh vegetables.

Re : The coat. I'm rather puzzled over this as most Pei bred are brush coat. What makes you think that this puppy is different? Some people's skin can react to Pei fur and will come out in a rash after contact with the dog. Apart from that I can't really help!

Having read your post I'm wondering how much research you've done into the breed and more importantly the breeder, before you came to the decision to own one. You mention nothing about health testing nor whether the parents and puppy are KC registered. Do you have a Shar-Pei savvy vet lined up? What are your plans for training?

If you want any more information please ask!

I'm not sure where you gleaned that piece of information from but it's absolute RUBBISH!

Pei are a guardian breed originally used as general purpose farm dogs whose function was to assist the farmer with the livestock, protect the property and their owner and family.a trait which they still retain. A well socialised and trained Pei should be a calm confident dog, reserved and suspicious but not aggressive towards people or other animals.

Georgina is my 2nd Pei and like my first is a real sweetheart. She lives quite happily with my other dog and my cat and has no interest whatsoever in other dogs or any animals we come across in our walks. She's also been used as a "stooge" dog many times to help with the rehabilitation of reactive dogs. I can take her anywhere, knowing she'll be well behaved.

Although my children are now grown up she's actually very good with children we've met especially the smaller ones as she seems to realise because they're "fragile" she must be gentle with them. She'll stand quietly by my side and let them pat her head and to show her affection she licks their hands!

When strangers come to my gate, she usually leaves my other dog (a Mini Schnauzer) to do the barking whilst she comes to find me and accompany me to the gate where she'll stand watching. If they need come into the property, she'll follow from a distance until she's satisfied they're not a threat and then return to settle down in the front doorway.

Unfortunately, comments like yours do nothing to help prospective owners perception of a breed, be it a Shar-Pei or not.and I doubt if you'd like it if I made similar comments on your Malamute a breed about which I have zilch knowledge! Perhaps the next time you give an opinion on a particular breed please base it on FACTS! .

You can pretend to be what you want on the internet but you are NOT a doctor. I am and am still registered as such with the British Medical Association, even though I am long retired.

    You?

The spirited response I expected from Pork1epe1.
I have to say that 'tough' and 'scary' would not be the words I would chose to describe any of the Shar Pei that I have met.
