I thought I was imagining things when I first saw this. I'm on my computer on the back porch when Pikey (My Beagle rescue from a local shelter) paws at the Pantry door where I keep his favorite treat. When he gets my attention, he comes over, looks me in the eye, and smiles. It's not "hey, I think he may be smiling". He is distinctly showing portions of both his lower and upper front teeth. I'm going to try to get a picture so I can send it along, since Pikey is the first dog I have seen put on a genuine smile.
Rosie smiles too. Whenever something pleases her, the smile comes and not any other time. She also 'talks' which has everybody in stitches.
All my 4 hooligans smile too, I got phone call from my vets when they went in to be neutered, saying they are snarling at them & can I go down & help get them out of their cages, I at to explain they are smiling not snarling & they are safe to remove them from their cages xx
I've seen dogs smile before. Certain bloodlines which seem to show the tendency too but some people mistake it for aggression when it's showing of the teeth.
One of my dogs Bunny would 'smile' , she would lift her top gums exposing her teeth in a sort of none aggressive snarl I taught here to smile on command for a treat. Bunny is long gone but still missed
Yes that's it that is what Bunny used to do when I left her for any length of time and first thing in the morning .
That's what all my hooligans did at the vets - can't blame the vets for calling me thinking they were snarling at them.
I still don't have a good picture of Pikey smiling, but I found this picture that's pretty close to what it looks like. If I ever get a good shot of my Beagle smiling, I will pass it along.
