Came across this article I can't even fathom what would possess some one to write such none sense. Yes there are a lot of people who think Pit Bulls is inclusive of numerous molosser breeds or any type of fighting dog. So it isn't that I've not heard that are mutts or not pure. But the way this is written is what blows my mind. I'm only going to put response to parts but will put link to full article. http://www.dogster.com/lifestyle/dog-breeds-pit-bulls-bsl-mutts "Let's remind the world's that Pit Bulls are just mutts" Each one contains at least one other breed. Could reminding people of this "other half" decrease discrimination and breed-specific legislation? It's too bad facts have never been a requirement for writers. What might work is pointing out to the less-than-savvy public that Pit Bulls are a “type” of dog. They are also mutts, which means at least 1 percent of a Pit Bull and as much as 99 percent of a Pit Bull is another breed or breeds. For the sake of simplicity, we’ll call it their “other half.” Hmmm then it is just a mix breed or another breed. It's not even a Pit Bull mix at that point. Denver’s law was broadened in 2004 when all Pit Bull “type” dogs were to be seized and destroyed. For one thing, it makes no sense because a Pit Bull Is a type of dog (as we’ve already learned) but what it really meant is that any dog with Pit Bull characteristics was fair game. So, Boxer and Mastiff mixes, for example, were singled out as well, even though their Pit Bull-like traits weren’t Pit Bull at all. Maybe those Boxer & Mastiff mixes had 1% Pit Bull in them so they were Pit Bulls since Pit Bulls are just mutts if you follow the writers logic. And they said Pit Bull is a type so guess those mixes met the type. What’s the point? That maybe by pointing out that Pit Bulls have other breeds in them, we might avoid or change BSL. If you have a Pit Bull, look at him. He probably has some bully breed traits such as a flat, broad head; a wide chest; and defined muscles. Otherwise, you wouldn’t know he’s a Pit Bull. Now why on earth would that help? Why would people care if you point that out. People consider them dangerous and they already think Pits are mutts or a type agreeing with the misinformed general public / politicians isn't going to change anything. We try to educate people that Pit Bulls are in fact a pure, real breed. *A wide chest isn't a correct Pit Bull trait. But what about the rest of him? (List the characteristics of your Pit Bull’s other half, then see which type, breed or breeds those match the most. Some examples follow.) I'm only listing a few of the 10 things they said, but all were ridiculous 3. Are his ears pricked or floppy? Many terriers have pricked ears while many hounds have floppy ears. Both are Pit Bull traits so that's irrelevant. 8. Is he naturally really game or is he more laid back? The bully side of a Pit Bull already makes him game but, if he also has terrier or other prey driven types of dogs, he’ll be even more so. Pit Bulls have bulldog AND terrier in them so this is a real head scratcher. "Even more so" isn't a measurement but prey drive level varies in Pits just like any other breeds. 10. When he has free reign, does he try to bolt through the nearest gate, or does he lie down and sniff the grass? Breeds that want to run -- and try to escape in order to do so -- include the Siberian Husky. If your Pit Bull is content to stay put, he might have a lap dog breed in him. This was one of the most ignorant comments. Dogs within numerous breeds will try to bolt, especially if you haven't trained them not to. This is including the lap dog breeds of which I've seen many door darters and those that'd get out of fence given the chance. Sibs do seem to like to roam and are great escape artist but then Pits are really good at it too not sure how it'd be an indication of another breed. You could do this non sense with almost any breed out there. Does your lab try to bolt, that might indicate he's part sib. Does your Dane have wide set eyes he might be a Spaniel. Dogs have similar DNA from breed to breed your looking at like 1-2% differences. What breed doesn't share traits with other breeds? None that I've ever seen. You know like Irish and German people share traits as to their stupid human analogy.
A stupid article especially the comments about bolting My Chloe could have escaped from a maximum security prison and she was a 9 lb Tibetan Spaniel! And Laynee the first dog in the article looked just like Tarn who was a Border Collie x Fox Terrier and didn't have a drop of Pit Bull in her body!.
OK why do I now feel dumber having read that article? Could dispute almost every comment in the post but frankly not wasting the time.
Changing the name didn't work 100yrs ago, it won't work now. I don't think saying they are mutts is going to do a thing either. This isn't a problem easily solved and of course some people will never listen. (Like the crazies from dogbites site). But what I think is helpful would be Pointing at the positive aspects of the breed (not physical traits they share with other breeds). Bringing to light the good members of the breed. Being honest about any negative aspects as well. Most breeds are not for everyone, Pits are no exception. General education of what a Pit Bull is and should be. Actively fighting BSL if the chance presents. Being a good owner. Maybe Chloe had some Husky or even Central Asian Shepherd in her lol. Yes the bolting part was most stupid. No clue on Laynee might have Pit Bull or be no Pit at all as with the dog you knew. I see a lot of people ask is their dog a Pit mix and there is no way to tell just by looking. Seen plenty that look like they could be but that doesn't mean they are. Just like Tarn I've known dogs where the mix was known not to be Pit Bull but they would have been identified as such by looks if found roaming out in shelter. An IQ lowering article indeed.
