Early Tuesday morning, around 2:00 am I woke up and found Pikey, my newly rescued Beagle. trembling. It was almost like when a human has chills and fever. It scared me because I haven't seen it before in dogs and I didn't know what to do. I even thought he might be dying. In trying to comfort him, I began to rub his back in long, even strokes while I tried to think what to do. (I put the bed covers on him to get him warm, but that had no effect). Finally, after a long time rubbing his back, (over 30 minutes) he began to settle down and stop shaking but I was still worried. Wednesday morning he seemed to be OK and ate his regular meal, but without his usual enthusiasm for food. I do remember waking up to some very loud thunder and wonder if he was simply scared. I'm still concerned and will take him to see the Vet. Meanwhile, I'm hoping someone has some information about why he was trembling for a very long time.
Wonder what flea/worming treatment he's on? Our lad had a reaction to Comfortis and was trembling for maybe couple of hours and was spaced out with glazed eyes as if trying to focus. He also made gulping motions with nose up in air. Emergency vet monitored him but he was fine after couple more hours. I changed his treatment to Nexgard.
Was it his whole body or just his head. It will probably just be a case of keeping an eye on him and monitoring it for now of he is healthy otherwise
John, was Pikey just trembling or was he shaking badly? Had something different happened the day before? Different food, spraying the yard - anything at all different? Even different soap powder in the washing machine?
Dogs do often tremble if they are frightened of thunder. They can also do it when they are in pain. It is not often that a Beagle loses his enthusiasm for food - do you think he could have scavenged something unsuitable? Or could he have even had a fall from the bed? I do hope Pikey is better today, but if not, a quick trip to the vet is the best policy. Awwroooo Pikey. (Beaglish for Get Well Soon).
I guess shivering would be the best description, like when a human has a chill, and he was shaking all over. This is Saturday, three days later, and he has been fine ever since the event. He's very strong on our daily walk and his enthusiasm for food has come back.. In looking back I really believe it was the very loud thunderclap that scared him so bad that he started shivering. Loud thunder is rare is this part of California and this one woke me up from a deep sleep. Thank you for caring about my Beagle, Pikey.
John, it sounds like Pikey was just scared from the loud thunderclap. My angel Little One was terrified of loud sounds and would shiver and try and hide for hours afterwards, whereas Pereg might be startled at first but calms down quickly. But I would advise that if Pikey has another episode like that, that you take him to the vet for a full check-up. The thing you have to remember is that he has not been with you very long so neither of you really know yet how the other one reacts to certain things. Please give him a cuddle from me!
In a previous post above this one. The one about fire works, I described what I did many years ago. Your post made me remember that the new solution I saw online was called a "thunder jacket". BTW..the towel I used was free.
If it helps any- Sophie trembles spontaneously over just about anything. Callie does it when he's cold. Mr. Foot our cat goes into a full out seizure, regularly...then shakes his head and he's back with us no problem. So sometimes it's not something serious, I would double check with the vet.
