Information wanted on Hungarian Vizsla? General Chat

This is a breed I recently have become highly interested in!
I know two, and have met others, and they are just such beautiful dogs!

I was just wondering a few things from those who have/know them!

Exercise requirements?
Activity level indoors?
Major health issues?

Any other info would be good!

I'm not an expert but the second depends on the first and the answer to the first is .....lots!....as much as possible!

Hi Me too,but the wire haired,they are very agile,love swimming but very loyal,and I know a retired couple who got a puppy,but they are steady,but do have there mad moments.Though they are quite expensive,I think the retired couple paid 1250 because it came from a field champion blood line.Gemini54

The Vizsla is a fabulous breed, next to the Boxer, its the one i have most to do with.

If you are prepared for the exercise levels for a Boxer, you will cope with a Vizsla..some folk say they are the neurotic of the HPR group of gun dogs, that's not my experience of them, as long as you can give a good hrs of lead walk a day they will be happy family dogs, they will take much more if you want to give it, but as with most active breeds as long as they get a good stimulating walk, the will be happy.

Some lines are more active than others... And you may have to look hard not to find Yogi, in their pedigree, there are a few lines that are duel purpose, that's down to preference, there is no spilt in conformation like some breeds, working/show they all look the same.

They are a little less calmer ( so I am told) than their wire haired cousins , along with slighter in build.

Health issues , generally a healthy breed that can live well into teenage yrs. other than hips..POLYMYOSITIS (muscle inflammation) is the most horrendous condition this breed can suffer from, so you must make sure your breeder is aware of it , and their lines are free from it, thankfully the club and members are working hard to eradicate this condition from the breed, btw..this also applies to the wire haired, not as prevalent, but have heard it can affect them to.

As a family pet, they are wonderful, loyal, and need to be with their people, the closer the better, they love to sit on knees and give cuddles....I know people who work and show theirs, or just have them as regular pets... They will do whatever you want them to.

I don't know of any litters, my friend will not have another now for few years, but if the breed interests you, why not get to a few shows and get to know them and their breeders.

Do you know much about Autumnglory vizslas?
The lady that has the two vizslas i see quite a bit when walking, i know her older male is used as a stud dog for them.

Their site isn't te best, but i know from talking to her she always talks about health testing and champion lines, and both her boys (father and son) are beautiful dogs!
Not seen her in a while due to working hours.

No don't know them, but may have seen her round the ring ...tbh if you know and like their type, them why not phone and speak to her, the dogs are lovely and she seems to do all relervent tests...

Her boys really are beautiful! The older one I know is Kristo!

Also... is there much difference between males and females?

I've only came across this breed recently, a couple I meet on my local walking route have one.
They said when they met the breeder, his first question was "So, you think you're fit enough to own a Vizsla?"

Absolutely beautiful breed, she's a stunner, loads of energy.

I know alfie is a male and so I "should" get a female, but she has her two males and they get on great!

As Jackie has already pointed out Polymyositis is a concern, but you can contact Di Addicot directly when you find a litter and ask her to check the lines for it. She's very helpful.

Be prepared if you get one to be continually stopped and asked what type of dog you have and for people to be incredibly admiring of their good looks.

Exercise wise, Kibo normally has about two hours a day off lead walking, but can take more or less. This weekend he's climbed Ben Nevis with me and probably did almost double the distance that I did! The good news is that they do have an " off " switch too and are happy as Larry to snooze the day away, my boy sleeps like a teenager and won't get up in the morning until I do!

They don't call them velcro dogs for nothing either. They love their owners, to the point of utter devotion and are lap dogs trapped inside a gun dogs body. They love cuddles and to be on top of you.

I found mine easy to train, they're smart dogs and pick things up really quickly, although, they have to see a point to what you're teaching them!

They are extremely biddable. Rua just wants to please and please and she is only 18 weeks.
She is so totally focused on myself or my husband and is a complete cuddle bug.
There is no real difference between males or females with regard to temperament apart from the usual hormone stages.
Absolutely fantastic breed and she gets as much attention out walking as my big male Leo!!

As of yesterday I am officially on her waiting list!
It will still be about 3 years away..... but it will fly by I am sure! She said she will just keep me on her list until the time is right for me!!

I can't remember if you said you'd had a dog before but I think the best thing you could do is read...lots and lots ...on positive modern training methods and ways to socialise and raise a great dog.

Cool! I get so confused with all the different threads!

I know a couple of breeders, Vizellven and Fiscardo and train with quite a few HV's and HWV's. They are a bit too sensitive for my liking, seem to be quite stubborn in some ways so I admire them from afar! I prefer the wirehaired version to the smooth haired.
