They are beautiful and apparently tend to have a more stable temperament with other dogs - don't know how the coat length relates to temperament but I have been told this by quite a few people in Akitas. I was recently offered a GSD x Akita (another one ) and both parents were long coats - I thought they were beautiful but stuck to my guns, no more dogs
I used to meet a guy a couple of years ago when out walking Ivan, that had an old LC Akita girl. She was quite narky and didn't like dogs or people according to her owner. Don't know if this was always the case or just since she had started to age. She was absolutely stunning though and Ivan was besotted with her even though she didn't want a bar of him! Off topic but the first time I met this guy he proceeded to tell me all about Leos, most of which was complete rubbish!!!
Buy one get one fluffy. I love longhaired Akitas. And long haired Rottweilers. And long haired Mastiffs - more common than you'd think - http://www.fluffymastiff.com/. The odd fluffy Dogue De Bordeaux or Bullmastiff. And am on my second long haired shar-pei. Anything that you don't see that many of popping out longhaired. Gotta love the fluff!
Aw they're lovely, a lot more coming up in rescue now . I really couldn't handle all that hair though :-( Apparently they get really smelly, really quick :?
I used to know someone who had one of each. There wasn't much noticeable difference in temperament, they could both be up for an argument with other dogs, including each other, although IMO the LH was much prettier.
Ee, all this bad mouthing Akitas.....! Deed not breed people! I think some of you need to meet my two!
Tbf, I don't think people are bad mouthing, just sharing personal experiences of Akitas...which sadly haven't been good :? I actually haven't met an Akita around here yet that was dog friendly, and they are quite popular in the area. Some are owned by idiots but even the ones I know who we're trained and socialised have been DA. They walk in much the same style as I need to walk Cain - on lead, avoiding and finding secure off lead places, and IME this has been due to DA rather than poor recall. Your two sound wonderfully social (and zeke sounds so laid back that he's horizontal!) and I'm sure that there are lots if lovely Akitas out there, but when people only bump into DA Akitas it's hard for people not to tar the whole breed with the same brush :?
I certainly wasn't bad mouthing them, just repeating what I had been told about temperaments Both my Akita and my Akita x GSD have had impeccable manners and recall. In fact, they have both been used as stooge dogs with aggressive dogs so no problem with temperament at all I don't see many round here, it's staffie country, so can't comment on them in general although the two that I have met that both came out of rescue were both great with other dogs but had rubbish recall.
I know chellie Yes of course amanda, got to expect numpties on the street to have such stereotype views about Akitas, but not dog lovers on dogsey
The long coat can quite woolly like a long coat Mal, a difficult coat to manage sadly. I've seen someone round here with a male long coat Akita and it's absolutely stunning. He started making a beeline for us but I had to dart off because Dan doesn't appreciate male dogs and Keiko doesn't greet well on a lead, shame as I so wanted to meet him.
So all these dog loves on Dogsey cant pass comment on what they know or hear :? without being called numpties. I think you need to chill and not be so reactive because some people dare express a negative about the breed. My fried son was attacked by an Akitia a few weeks back, he had to jump over a wall to get away from it, My nephew has one, he is a lovely dog. As you say "deed not breed"...........
I called people on Dogsey dog lovers I called clueless people on the streets who say things such as 'oo you have fighting dogs, they kill people...' numpties My neighbour's daughter was attacked by a black lab on the cricket field just yesterday.
And, your point being ?? This is what you said............ Which insinuates anyone who has a negative opinion on the breed fits into the "numpty" catagory:? I think you need to chill and accept that some Akitias can be aggressive, just like other breeds, some are OK, some are not , and just because someone gives a negative experience/story, does not put them into the category of "stereotyping" a breed.
I guess it's like Staffies, they've been adopted as the status dog and overbred with poor temperaments so that many aren't great with other dogs. It's not slating the breed, it's just an unfortunate fact about many of the breed. I really fell for Anya, the LH Akita with brain damage/brain related issue, at Four Paws Rescue. Was sooo tempted but didn't think she'd be a good combination with Casper. I think her foster ended up falling for her, not surprised. She looked so teddybear like!
