I only needed to take into account the number of dogs of my breed handed over from folk living in flats to understand why everyone in the breed that I know and respect is so against them in flats without constant access to gardens.
my dogs dont have constant access to the garden at home, so it would make no difference. i dont leave the back door open for them, particularly on days like today, dogs dont even like being out in it cant ever imagine daph getting stressed about anything, shes that laid back she's horizontal asbo gets stressed when he isnt with me, so i dont think he would mind if i lived in a flat or a house, as long as he was glued to my hip as per usual
Why would any dog need constant access to gardens? my dogs make do with a paved patio area mainly for toileting. They only have access to the grass when I'm out there in the spring/summer. It makes zero difference to them as they are exercised on walks. One of them is an extremely high energy HPR breed and is fine, so I can't imagine a toy breed being more demanding than her.
I mean for toilets, I dont mean leave your back door open all day. If someone wants to take dogs up and down stairs so their dogs can go for a wee let them, not something I will ever agree to nor pup dogs of mine into a home like that. Mind you most folk with CCs in flats use cat litter boxes, lazy'ness
exactly my point if you gave your 3 the same exercise they get now but lived in a flat rather than a house, do you think they would cope?
mine only have access to the garden when they need to toilet, which is when i let them out. obviously stairs is an issue while they are growing, but my adults go up and down my house stairs so makes no difference, and plus they are small enough to carry down if you dont want them walking it ;-) and theres always the lift
Surely peoples dogs dont just go in the garden for a wee/poo and then back in?? jeezus....well mine come in when they ask to, and go out when they ask to - ours love the garden, more so when its nice... mind you ours are a playful lot
My OH lives in a flat also with his own garden, personally I wouldn't allow my dogs to be outside unsupervised anyway, anything could happen. They also prefer to be with me, they don't like being out in the garden on their own.
I'm lazy so would always prefer to have a garden with dogs if possible. However, the Lab and the terrier theoretically would be fine in a flat (provided it was ground floor -- I wouldn't have dogs that I had to cart upstairs multiple times a day as it isn't practical). I'd rather not have the Slovak in a flat, mainly because she can be pretty wild, throws herself around and barks a lot. Ground floor with a fenced garden could possibly work though, but I know these don't come up often. So yes for two, no for the Slovak.
If you have a safe, secure garden - like ours what could happen? Just the same as being left in the house on their own? I wonder how you folk work with dogs that dont like being on their own and your all constantly with them? Unless you dont work, in which case please share the secret of how you afford the dogs jobless..
The only time mine choose to stay outside on their own is when it is sunny. Apart from that, they don't bother.
couldnt see why anyone would have an issue with that after all it would be just the same as a house, without an upstairs. Here I am talking flats that dont have gardens, and not on ground floor.. My 4 would be terrible in a flat. I'ld be kicked out.
My dog can be left for several hours without a problem, she is a great house dog and has great manners. No barking, chewing etc... She just prefers to interact with me rather than me stuck out in a garden on her own.
In that case, I wouldn't have mine in a flat either. If I moved into a flat like that my dogs would stay with my parents as I wouldn't want them living there. It wouldn't be fair on them.
Same for me, mine would stay with mum. - I would rather my dogs be happy in a suitable home, than be selfish and take them for my needs. I would be happy to have a ground floor flat, with a garden and take my kids anything else I wouldnt find suitable and wouldnt even try it.
there is only asbo who actually runs around the garden, even then its only when its sunny, have to shove him out just for a wee if its raining daphni doesnt particularly bother with the garden, she lies under the chair away from the sun if i shut her out, if i leave the door open she comes and gets in her bed in the house.. as for breeding i have no idea.. wouldnt know until i was in that position.. if the flat was big enough for me to separate mum and pups (which to be honest would be the same as my house, i had the pups in the bedroom with me until 3 weeks old, and then they were moved into the kitchen when we begun weaning and socialising) whether or not i had access to a garden, as taking asbo out for toileting would be an issue if i was on my own and had the pups to watch too.. who knows.. i dont even know if i will breed again and i live in a house now..
would just like to point out on this one that i wouldnt move my dogs into a high rise type building where we would be numerous floors up, but then saying that i wouldnt live in one of those if i didnt have the dogs. i could do first floor, thats only like going up the stairs at home, which my dogs do on a regular basis. i wouldnt leave my dogs with my nana, i know they wouldnt be better off there ;-)
