Utonagan /Northern Inuit/Tamaskan dogs feedback please

    Hi Guys,

As you might have noticed I have started on our breed profiles again, and it won't be long before I have to do the profiles for the unrecognised breeds and so would appreciate feedback from owners of Utanagon/Northern Inuit/Tamaskan dogs and any other non-KC recognised 'wolfy looking' breeds.

The origins of these breeds seem to be shrouded in mystery, so I'd like opinions on your experience of owning these breeds, as well as thoughts in retrospect. If you can spare the time I'd appreciate you answering these questions:

Which of the 'wolfy looking' breeds do you own?
    1. How many, and how old?
    2. Has your dog suffered from any health ailments? If so please specify.
    3. Was your dog sold to you as a pedigree or cross breed?
    4. Did you feel you could trust the breeder/seller at the time?
    5. In hindsight, do you *feel* like you were mislead or told untruths, or felt some things were kept from you? (Doesn't matter if you know as a matter of fact, I'd like to know how you 'feel' about it all).
    6. If you know what you know now, would you buy from the same breeder again?
    7. How would you describe the character of your dog?
    8. How much exercise does your dog need?
    9. Is he/she easy to train?

Please only answer the questions, we don't want breeder names either, as we're just trying to get a general overview of things. I might add some further questions later, so please check back. Thanks!

Will answer the questions but as a sore point i really hate the way when you refer to these breeds your always do so with a " so its "breeds". It almost seems like you are humouring us by calling them a breed at all. Like people sometimes do by using air quotes or the like, which is a little condesending.

    Anyway onto the questions . . .

1.How many, and how old? 2 one 3 1/2 the other 2 and a bit.

2.Has your dog suffered from any health ailments? If so please specify. Ela had a small skin infection after her first season which was due to adolence (sp?) Raina picked up a bug doing the rounds last year. Other then that no issues.

3.Was your dog sold to you as a pedigree or cross breed? Sold as a pedigree but was made clear none KC and long way off being a KC breed.

4.Did you feel you could trust the breeder/seller at the time? Yes

5.In hindsight, do you *feel* like you were mislead or told untruths, or felt some things were kept from you? (Doesn't matter if you know as a matter of fact, I'd like to know how you 'feel' about it all). No

6.If you know what you know now, would you buy from the same breeder again? Yes

7.How would you describe the character of your dog? Ela aloof with strange people but otherwise bomb proof, Raina is everyones friend. Otherwise both intelligent but also easy to distract, strong prey drive with small furries.

8.How much exercise does your dog need? 1 - 2 hours a day running round off lead also needs mental excerise daily

9.Is he/she easy to train? Yes and both are doing well at training however i grew up with a sibe, dally and cocker so the bar for training is pretty high!

This is my view of the "Breed"

    1.How many, and how old?

Two, a bitch and a dog.. both NIs. One 5 1/2 the other 4 1/2.

2.Has your dog suffered from any health ailments? If so please specify.

The older one has suffered from pain in her right hip from young... maybe 1 year old, but it hasn`t seemed to worsen with age (as of yet). The younger one was cryptorchid and was castrated at 10 months old.

3.Was your dog sold to you as a pedigree or cross breed?

Sold as a pedigree and i was led to believe KC recognition was imminent.

4.Did you feel you could trust the breeder/seller at the time?

Yes and still do as i truly believe they didn`t know the full extent of the whole sorry mess at the time i bought my dogs. One breeder has stopped breeding altogether, the other has gone onto create a healthier cross.. by only using dogs that have been vigorously health and behaviour tested.

5.In hindsight, do you *feel* like you were mislead or told untruths, or felt some things were kept from you? (Doesn't matter if you know as a matter of fact, I'd like to know how you 'feel' about it all).

Yes, all the untruths were fed to potential owners (and breeders) of these dogs, by the dog society for the "breed".

6.If you know what you know now, would you buy from the same breeder again?

Yes, if it was a different breed they were breeding.

7.How would you describe the character of your dog?

My bitch is very close to me, but she only accepts affection on her own terms. She suffers from nervousness when out and around people she doesn`t know.. but is a lot friendlier with people who come in the house. She is also afraid of small children (runs away). She is VERY prey driven, will try to catch just about anything. She is very dog aggressive, it seems worse around less dominant dogs.

My dog learn`t a lot of bad habits around other dogs from my bitch..(my fault) He is a lot more openly affectionate to people he knows.. loves a cuddle. But he is wary of people whilst out... he is afraid of small children too, reacts like the child was another dog..(barks and lunges) (again probably my fault as it never crossed my mind to socialise them with small kids, as there are none in my social circle). He again is very prey driven.. anything from cats to small furries.

8.How much exercise does your dog need?

I exercise them separately for between 45 mins to an hour off lead a day. They are very good if they don`t get regular exercise... they`ll just sleep the day on the sofa.

    9.Is he/she easy to train?

Initially yes, they both went to puppy classes and learn`t the basics (clicker trained). They will perform any of these commands when there are no distractions.. but will 'go deaf' if another dog or prey item is spotted. For this reason, they are kept on a extending lead until i am sure it`s safe to let them off.

    1. How many, and how old?
I have one at Rainbow Bridge (as of May this year) was 6 yrs old, 1 is 7 months old. Both NI's, both bitches.

    2. Has your dog suffered from any health ailments? If so please specify.

My girl at the bridge had hip dysplasia, arthritis & osteo arthrits. None in my 7 month old as yet.

    3. Was your dog sold to you as a pedigree or cross breed?
Didn't get my old girl until she was 4yrs old. 7 mth old sold as a cross breed.

    4. Did you feel you could trust the breeder/seller at the time?
    yes for 7 mth old.

    5. In hindsight, do you *feel* like you were mislead or told untruths, or felt some things were kept from you? (Doesn't matter if you know as a matter of fact, I'd like to know how you 'feel' about it all).

Yes. After a lot of digging I discovered the sires name on the breeders cert for my old girl was infact wrong to cover up the mother of my dog being bred with her own father.

    6. If you know what you know now, would you buy from the same breeder again?

I wouldn't but I believe the breeder for my old girl has stopped breeding anyways after a lot of criticism from buyers & the society I believe. The breeder of my 7 month old has emigrated.

    7. How would you describe the character of your dog?

My old girl was very dog aggressive, (extending lead & muzzled when outdoors) didn't like you in her space, she preferred to come to you in her own time.Very stubborn too. My 7 month old is very bright, bubbly, friendly, loves cuddles. Very shy of cats, loves other dogs.Is quite eager to please.

    8. How much exercise does your dog need?
Old girl needed only 20-30 mins a day due to health issues discovered 2 weeks after I got her. 7 month old gets half hour a day (as shes a pup) plus training.

    9. Is he/she easy to train?
My 7 mth old is quite easy to train, working on recall everyay aswell as other things. My old girl had no recall whatsoever & was far too distracted by anything to learn.

Which of the 'wolfy looking' breeds do you own?

Utonagan, although I call him a mixed breed these days.
    1. How many, and how old?
Just the one, seven years old.
    1. Has your dog suffered from any health ailments? If so please specify.
Epilepsy. Quite severe, involving cluster seizures.

    1. Was your dog sold to you as a pedigree or cross breed?
A pedigree! KC recognition just around the corner. No health problems! Apparently.

    1. Did you feel you could trust the breeder/seller at the time?
Yes. However, there was little information around that I had access to.
    1. In hindsight, do you *feel* like you were mislead or told untruths, or felt some things were kept from you? (Doesn't matter if you know as a matter of fact, I'd like to know how you 'feel' about it all).
Definitely. I now believe the whole thing was shrouded in lies and secrecy.
    1. If you know what you know now, would you buy from the same breeder again?
    No chance!
    1. How would you describe the character of your dog?
Really friendly with people. Very loving, very playful, great fun, big and bouncy, very sweet-natured, very perceptive (leaps on me if I get uspet, hides if I am cross, even if it's not with him). Allows the children to jump on him. Loves being with the family and part of the family and doing everything with the family. Very forgiving.

Aggressive with other dogs - I often wondered if it was because of being 'bullied' by other dogs as a puppy because he was fine as a pup. Has never injured another dog though, even in a fight.

Very strong-willed, stubborn. Routines quickly become established, such that he expects walks, food, etc. at certian times and complains if they don't happen. Quite hyper at times. Excitable, yet can be calm and comforting too.

    1. How much exercise does your dog need?
As much as he can get! Loves to chase rings and balls and jump in streams.
    1. Is he/she easy to train?
Yes, he's very food orientated so will eagerly do things, but sometimes on his terms, i.e. he can learn and do what you're asking him but if he feels like it. For instance, recall is fine, unless he sees something he'd rather chase - like rabbits etc.

Which of the 'wolfy looking' breeds do you own?
    1. How many, and how old?

    1. 3 Northern Inuits aged nearly 6, 4 and 3

[*]Has your dog suffered from any health ailments? If so please specify.

1 suffers from hot spots and 2 of them (related) have relatives with epilepsy but thankfully my girls have not.

[*]Was your dog sold to you as a pedigree or cross breed?

Sold as a pedigree with KC recognition very soon.

[*]Did you feel you could trust the breeder/seller at the time?

      Yes.

[*]In hindsight, do you *feel* like you were mislead or told untruths, or felt some things were kept from you? (Doesn't matter if you know as a matter of fact, I'd like to know how you 'feel' about it all).

      Yes.

[*]If you know what you know now, would you buy from the same breeder again?

      Definately not.

[*]How would you describe the character of your dog?

All 3 of them very loving and good with people. 2 of them get on very well with other dogs outside of their home. Liadan can be grumbly with other dogs when onlead. Both girls are not accepting of dogs coming into their home and introducing pups has to be done very carefully. Torin the male is daft as a brush and very good with pups.

[*]How much exercise does your dog need?

I would describe them as high energy in small bursts. The two girls are much lower energy than Torin. My dogs get a good run every day, lots of ball play, lead walks several times a week and training at least 3 times a week. They are happy to miss a day if for any reason they can't get out.

      [*]Is he/she easy to train?

I believe that my dogs are trained to quite a high standard compared to many of this type. I find that they enjoy training and are very capable, but very easily turn off. We have competed in and won in agility and obedience. Sacha also did a BH in schutzhund. Compared to other breeds it does take alot longer to sink in what is being asked of them. They have a very high prey drive and I would never trust them offlead around livestock. They have a very limited attention span. My BSD's are happy to go on all day, where the NI's enjoy training to a point and I have to be careful to stop before they lose interest.

Which of the 'wolfy looking' breeds do you own?
    Northern Inuit

    [*]How many, and how old?
Just the 1, just turned 4

[*]Has your dog suffered from any health ailments? If so please specify.
    Allergy's

[*]Was your dog sold to you as a pedigree or cross breed?
Neither, I knew about the NI's and this question was never brought up

[*]Did you feel you could trust the breeder/seller at the time?
    Yep and I still do

[*]In hindsight, do you *feel* like you were mislead or told untruths, or felt some things were kept from you? (Doesn't matter if you know as a matter of fact, I'd like to know how you 'feel' about it all).
    Nope

[*]If you know what you know now, would you buy from the same breeder again?
    I would yes

[*]How would you describe the character of your dog?
Shila was often like tigger on speed but has calmed down a lot recently, she's loving and loyal, eats everything put in front of her, loves the attention, easy to train, low prey drive, gets on with everything and anyone except horses and cows.

[*]How much exercise does your dog need?
She may not need it but she gets 3 hour long walks a day

    [*]Is he/she easy to train?
Yes always has been, very food and ball motivated
