Oh dear. Aren't they long coated.

A lot of rescues are notoriously bad at getting breeds right. Not long ago I was at a Dogs Trust branch, and a purebred Sheltie (or cross, but it looked pure to me) was labelled as a Chihuahua cross.

She looks pure to me and yes Labradork, Tervs are the longcoated variety of the Belgian Shepherd.

Yep, she's a pure Mali, possibly working line. Where is she listed? Breed club rescue may be interested to follow her.

Edit: just found her.... Hmmm! The comments about her "calming down".... well they never do, really!

I'm also not surea German Shepherd-experienced home would be ideal for her either; they are very different breeds and need different training techniques.

I thought she went out last Month.
I did point out that her info card was wrong to her kennel maid. When I next visited her homecheck was being done that day.
She's a lovely Dog....very wary (more than usual)

Could be either a pure bred Mali or a Mali X GSD. Working lines, and they all look different.

IME (and I train with and compete againsst plenty of working line BSD and GSD all over the UK) they do not need different training techniques!

Understood.... but it just irritates me when I see BSDs in mainstream rescues with the "German Shepherd experience needed" tag. There are still an awful lot of old-school types out there who have had GSDs for decades, and who still subscribe to the old jerk-and-choke dominance type of training, which is too harsh for a BSD. Too harsh for any dog really, but a BSD is easily ruined by that approach.

Not to mention that if you've genuinely had GSDs for decades, a Mali is a bit of a culture shock if you've not had experience of them before.....

But to be fair there are an awful lot of NEW school types out there who do NOT subscribe to jerk and choke training AND it does not suit GSDs either!

I would say that if you had only experience of SHOW/PET GSD/BSD than having a WORKING GSD/BSD is a bit of a culture shock too! ;)

How do they differ in every day life??
How do you think 2 , 2 year old dogs brought up the same way but from diffrent lines would act???

The show/pet lines tend to be far shyer than working lines. Environment cannot override genetics.

You should tell that to my show line BSD. He doesn't do shy!!

I have experience of lots of BSD's (show lines mainly) and GSD's (both show and working lines) and I definately see the difference between BSD and GSD.

Perhaps its just the clubs I experienced with the GSD's were not the normal but I would hate to see a BSD treated and trained in that way.

I am glad your showline BSD is not shy, they should not be, unfortunately many of them are.

I would hope there IS a difference between BSDs and GSDs, after all they are two different breeds after all! ;)

There are clubs and trainers out there in all disciplines which are prehistoric; unfortunately not all dinosaurs are dead! :-(

Definately a mal :) Rescues often get is wrong - my friends pembrokeshire corgi was listed on a rescue site as a collie x corgi and the same rescue listed an aussie as having the same temperament as a collie!! oh dear...

Looks pure to me too - but I'm no expert.

A general question for the BSD experts...is it possible for a Terv to Terv mating to throw up a smooth-coated pup?

Would this be a Terv or a Malinois?

I'm just asking out of pure curiosity because surely when they were actually farm dogs, the colour and coat texture would be driven by the personal preference of the individual farmer?

Does this mean that from time to time, a pup that resembles another type of BSD turns up in the litter?

The only show-bred Malis I've met have been very timid and gentle and the working ones have been :026: but admitedly, I've not seen a big sample.
