I took Dexter to a different park yesterday and was interested to see a lovely mixture of dogs. Shortly after we got there, a woman arrived with a massive dog. From a distance, I thought at first it was a very big Husky or maybe a Malamute. Then I realised it looked more like a GSD but larger and slimmer. When I finally went over and met the dog and owner and asked, turned out the dog was a GSD X SARLOOS...? Very striking dog. He was muzzled because apparently he's good with other dogs but 'not great with people and I'm scared he'll do something stupid.' Once she let this dog off the lead, he headed straight for Dexter, and placed his front paws on Dex's back - and even I could see that this was not 'play'...! Does anyone else have any experience of this particular crossbreed? Just curious as to what they are like, generally speaking. Many thanks.
Sounds a bit odd that she would let him off the lead with what seems like known "people issues"....even muzzled! What did he do afterwards? Did he seem to want to play quite rough?
Well, it can be pretty typical GSD play so it doesn't mean he's an aggressive dog, just a bit boisterous. Not that it makes it excusable though, Casper can be too OTT like this and so he goes on a longline and only off-lead with dogs we know. One day this dog will jump on a dog that doesn't like it and will give him a real telling off :?
what made you say it wasnt play? Tupac can be all paws.... was it really this mix? or another missold dog? was on a few sites the other day looking at all the rubbish they spout..seems saarloos csv and wolf are still the buzzword even tho u dig deeper its all rubbish and mainly gsd crosses sold for mega bucks. to answer your question...this mix is generally nice with other dogs.
Although Zeff is not a GSD cross, I would imagine he is similar. His play with some dogs can look very rough to people who do not know him. I wince sometimes whn I am watching him play with a couple of his best mates, but as much as I remove him from the other dog, they come back in wanting to play again. So I go on thier reactions more than his. I am glad she has been responsible muzzling him if she is worried.
It is difficult isn't it, knowing who to trust in this world. I have seen a litter of NID x CWD for sale. I don't know the breeders and have no reason to doubt the description. The pup left is very interestingly marked and has black, white and a bit of tan colouring on her face. Not what I would have expected but with the NID heritage it legitimises it, IMO.
actually, I remember now, we met a large.....I'm sorry not too sure what....but very similar looking to a Sarloos that greeted zulu by slapping him on the head with his huge paw Haha.
Never herd of them before, but also not herd of any of the other wolfy looking or x dogs before joining in on here. I always thought wolf x were not allowed as pets in england without licences and to be muzzled and leashed at all time? I went through a faze years ago thinking it would be a great 'pet' to have.
Are they not part wolf? After a quick search the information I have found suggest they are a cross between a GSD and a wolf, breed in the 1700(?) by Saarloos? And that they still display some wolf like tenancies. I suppose it would also depend on what Saarloos and the breeders after him also added to the breed. If they continued to inbreed or add GSD or more wolf it would greatly effect the amount of wolf in the breed. I am very curious and intregued at how a saarloos wolfhund, a shikoku, a kunming, a lupo italiano or a Czechoslovakian Wolfdog can be a registered breed by different KCs but other more recent wolf-dogs are not allowed in some areas as pets, or even allowed at all. Is it purely because these breeds don't have recent wolf added? Edit: Ohh just searched a bit more, according to Wiki So does that mean that if you were able to breed wolf-dogs which were mainly wolf for 3 generations the pups, which in theory would still be more wolf than domesticated dog would not be classed as a dangerous wild animal and would be ok for a pet without any licences or anything?
A very small percentage compared to the crosses!! I don't think there is anyone in the country breeding pure now
You would have to ask them Shoshone's blog said that she did not feel people could cope with the temprement. CR's blog was a bit of a u turn on his previous practices from what I recall. Not sure of anyone else who was breeding them?
One of the first thing my inuit will do is slap another dog with his paws. he is very much trying to play. He did once rip a whole in the side of my lurcher though doing this. And couaght the kids on the face when he was younger trying to slap them.
I was going to say the same thing about my NI, his paws were his staple source of getting someone to play with him
