i like both of these breeds, and after deciding my next dog is going to be a bigger breed im starting to look into the ones i like. (there are two completely different breeds in the running also) i look the look of these two breeds, and all the ones i have met have all been lovely. i want to know more about both of the breeds, and whats the difference between the two. what are the pros and cons to the breeds? do either of them have any health problems? ive read through the whole of the alaskan malamute club website, but not the husky one yet. all information welcome and of course pictures
there should be plenty of information about the breeds you are interested in on the tinterweb even the breed standard should give you an idea of what to expect from their personalities. i've been doing a lot of research myself of a relatively unknown breed and found quite a bit of info with some persistance! Maddie
In many ways they are very similar .... In my experience ... Mals are more trainable than Sibes and some Mals can safely be let off lead Mals are less demanding Mals are less of escapologists and do not tend to dig and jump out of gardens as do some Sibes Sibes are noisier Sibes are more likely to win races at sprint rallies over here You can compete with one Malamute at a rally but generally need multiple Sibes Sibes are less prone to be grumpy with other dogs (but good breeders don't breed from grouches anyway) Mals are less likely to eat not doggy family members (cats and hamsters etc) Sibes also seem to get up at the crack of dawn and think everyone else should!(Thinking of when we camp with them!!) Mals can suffer from HD and cataracts and there is epilepsy in some lines - although again - not an issue when you have a good breeder - not sure on Sibes - think its similar I love Sibes but could never live with one as I believe they are a much more demanding intensive dog (this from my experience of seeing them at rallies and shows and camping with them and also doing bits for rescue)
I've fallen in love with sibes to after seeing the most gorgeous one on here and naturally I've had to research them
had a look through the sibe site as well now and have to say it hasnt really helped me decide between the two. it seems mals seem a bit more laid back than the sibe, but again im not sure. all the ones ive met havent seemed to be any major differences in personalitites. we never had a mal in at work but we had three sibes. 2 were together and they were great representatives of the breed i think, the other wasnt very nice at all but i put that down to bad breeding, to be honest it didnt really look like much of a husky...
do any of you on here have both that you could give me a comparison between the two? and also pictures
we chose the Alaskan Malamute,a breed we admired for many years, and after much research we brought our first Mal home, and now have 6 between the age of 13 years and 11 months. Why don'y rou try to met up with breeders of both in your area or visit a local open show,If you can let us know what area you live I will look in the dog press to see what is coming up.For the next few months there will be plenty of dog shows and more and more have classes for both Mals and Sibes. Mind you we need our bumps read as we now have 3 Canadian Eskimo Dogs as well.
hi im in macclesfield in cheshire, so showing wise its easy for me to get to any shows that are at bingley hall. id love to watch some rallies but i know the season is over now. i would quite like to visit some breeders i think, but not when they have puppies
