Hi everyone We have a neo mastiff he's 5 month old he is very playful and giddy, we have been taking him out once a day for half an hour slow walking walk and he as been socialising with other dogs, the other day he went for a check up at the vets and she has said half an hour is way too much for him, we should walk him 10 minutes of a morning and 10 at night, due to mastiffs bone growth until he's 18 month, we put his new walks into practice and he' s sulky now and off his food I think its because the 10 minute only allows him the small field at the back of our house and he is a recluse were as on the second playing field is access to all his canine friends, I dont want to over do it but i feel it may effect him on the social aspect, is there any breeders or large dog owners out there that have an opinion on this much appreciated thankyou
dont know what the difference is for giant heavy breeds but the general rule is 5 minutes per month of age, so 25 half an hour would be fine. when he is at the park with the other dogs is he allowed off lead to play with them?
I can understand why the vet is telling you this as the bone growth in neo's is so important that its kept in check and unhindered but you said you were doing half an hour each time slow walking. I would have thought that you would be okay with this. If he was charging around at full pelt for both of these half hour trips then I could understand the vet concern. Many years ago, one of my friends had neos and kept them in huge kennels outside where they spent a lot of their time running up and down during the day and then charging around when they came out to play and she used to show hers successfully. Perhaps you need to ask on a neo forum site as they may have changed their ideas about exercise these days ?? Beautiful dogs!!
thankyou for the input we allow him 10 mins play with the other dogs we have gotten to be good friends with the owners he doesnt dart about too much just playful puppy wrestling with his friend Rico who is a malamute,
i would only be walking him at this stage for 15 minutes max for each walk , i wouldn`t be giving him any longer , it really is very important that he isn`t allowed to over do it at his young age right now , your vet is absolutely right so i would be listening to him enjoy your pup , lovely breed
