The Leonberger... Tell me about your dogs?

The Leonberger is a breed that has interested me for a wee while, and after reading up on the breed and working with someone today who owns one, i'm wanting one more and more!

I'm not in the position for another dog atm and when I am it may be a rescue GSD or similar, but, the Leo is definitely a breed I would probably love to own so if there are any Leo owners please tell me more!! And pictures too please!

They are a lovely breed with (usually) excellent temperaments and are very healthy for a big dog. This is our girl Simi (who lives with Siberian Huskies and thinks she is one!)

Thanks Mick! Simi is STUNNING! I have heard/read great things about their temperaments which is one of my main attractions to them. I'm guessing they're well over 1000 for a pup? How much do I need to save LOL!

To be honest, I'm not sure. Ours was a present from our friend who breeds them. I imagine about £1000......

My brother has two, a bitch and a dog. Koda the boy cost £1000 but that was about 5 years ago. The bitch Ruby came to them from an unwanted home as she was unmanageable!! Yeah keeping a dog that size in a garden and feeding them on whatever they ate will possibly do that!!

Both dogs have excellent temprements, are good with other dogs but the malting in spring is horrendous!! My sister in law goes potty with it all!!!

Here's a piccie of them both - Ruby on the left and Koda on the right.

Why not combine your love of Leos with your wish to rescue, and get a rescue Leo...? :)

We have huskies as our main breed, so the Leo's moulting is mild by comparison.

I wouldn't have thought i'd be likely to find one in need of a home..? Of course I would though if one came up.

If you contact Leo breed clubs they will put you in touch with people working in rescue. I gather that Leos do need rehoming at times. Best of luck.

Highly Recommend a Leo friend for your Newf  ~ Magnificent breed without a doubt :049: but do ensure you do all the relevant checking of health checks .... they are prone to some debilitating & heart breaking conditions but thankfully the tests are finally getting sorted so that breeders can begin the process of eliminating these afflictions :038:

My sister in Laws dog Koda (see earlier piccies!!) as a puppy had that reflux thing where every time he ate he up chucked half his meal!
She contacted the breeder who refunded half his money and my sis i/l decided to have him neutered as she didn't want it to be passed on to any further generations. The breeder had asked when she collected him as a puppy if she'd be willing to allow him to stud in the future as she had 5 bitches she bred from.

Leonbergers are a fantastic breed. The most loving dogs with wonderful temperaments.
As has been said do your homework and find a reputable breeder.
Be prepared to be stopped ALOT on walks!

Here are some pics of my beautiful boy Ivan
