i like akitas and see more and more of them popping up in rescue and cant understand why. they are such beautiful dogs. thats why i have just started this thread as trawling through the rescue sites just fallen in love with two brothers :-( the breeder i got my cresteds from has japanese akita inus, but has had an american akita before, i think mainly its just looks that these dogs are different? a couple of people i know have cresteds and akitas just want to know what they are like really, temperment healthwise etc, and as always pictures welcome
Hatchi ? Maybe, not definitely, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's had an effect. Don't know much about them, but agree that they're stunning looking dogs.
yes i suppose that could of had an impact... i havent seen the film yet. i think theyre gorgeous dogs.
I agree with the Hachi comment any animal lover will fall in love with this dog and some who don't think may well go off and get one on a whim:-(
Theres a stunning akita near us, hes very powerful but also very gentle and loving with his family. I would say aloof with strangers and hes ok with bitches but quite dominant with other males. They don't let him off lead much as he tends to go deaf!! He is an absolute beauty
A lot of people get them for the wrong reasons, don't train them properly and when they hit the teenage fase, they simply can't control them.... as they have turned into this huge powerful creature overnight.... The same goes for many powerful breeds....
My friend lost hers to cancer last year at age 9 she was a lovely dog great with kids and puppys not so great with other dogs if another dog did anything she thought rude they would be pinned to the floor. But puppys could hang off her ears and she would lay on the floor and let them maul her. She had to stay on a long line beacuse of the unpridictable behavior but was a dream with every thing else.
whats hatchi? akitas in recue has been a prob for several years since the start of the whole status dog thing they are very specialised dogs....espesh as they dont possess the usual range of standard doggy language....very very subtle and independant dogs
Spot on. There have always been a lot fo Akitas in rescue for this very reason but maybe more now the film has been released. Hachi is a film (released last year) about an Akita in japan who was found as a puppy. He followed his owner to the station every day when he went to work and waited there forhim to come home. On the day the owner died obviously he didn't return homew but Hachi wouldn't leave. He ended up living nearby on the railway. The family tried to take him home but he easn't happy there so they let him go. It's a true story and apparently there is a bronze statue of him somewhere - no idea where though. SO yes I can see why people would buy them. As pups they are little blobs of fluff with eyes. Then they grow up into complete monsters if they're not treated properly and trained well. They are a very powerful breed that can do a lot of damage but they can be one fo the most gently breeds you'll ever come across if they're raised correctly. I grew up with Akitas and I will definitely have more of them in the future. They are one of my favourite breeds.
it was remade this last year, think by disney, but im not sure.... it has richard gere in and is quite popular now.
Akitas are wonderful dogs but definitely not for the faint-hearted. A fully grown Akita is incredibly powerful. The breed is also well known for same-sex aggression and most owners have to keep dogs of the same sex separate. They can be incredibly loving and gentle, but in the wrong hands they can be a lethal weapon.
They are lovely looking dogs, I think that two are kept as guard dogs near where I live as I see them being taken for walks on an industrial area.
Watch the film and try and keep dry eyes:-( And also not want one! The statue is in the spot in tokyo that Hachi waited. Also when I had my first beagle pup.I got chatty with a guy who had had a beagle and now had an akita pup. that pup and then adult was beautifull but my goodness did she cause him some grief ,I think she ate at least one settee it may have been 2 and he had problems with other dogs with her and lots of health issues .She was very hard work, made my beagle seem like a walk in the park.......
sorry guys, hadnt heard of the film. when did it come out? i dont think it would have made much difference to akita numbers in rescue though, as that has already been a problem
2008 Type in "hachi a dogs tale" in play or amazon. A fellow sobber then MichealM? After the 3rd watch in 2 days I managed to cry discreetly for the last 10 mins which was good compared to the first watch{40 whole minutes of full on wailing] With regard to lots of the breed being in rescue ,I think their teddy bear looks will lull people into thinking that they're all cute and cuddly and not realise the hard work needed especially with a dog that gets big when mature. Saying that a lot of breeds have the same problem. At the end of the day we humans are the poblem people get animals these days on a whim and when they don't fit in with their lifestyle/colour sheme/get toilet trained quickly enough grow too big,or even god forbid do the things that that particular breed are meant to do they get rid of them:-( a lot then go and get another and do the same again when that dog isn't perfect...and again (have had experience with this) Untill people realise animals are a lifelong commitment and not always easy, things will never change
That would be a yes! It wasn't the heart attack or him dying that got me, it was the dog waiting....... ooooh, I'm welling up again just thinking about it!
Stunning looking dogs Lots of dogs can have issues with them because they have the high tail, ears and head carrage that makes them look agressive Which can lead to them being attacked lots - and then become aggressive 2 in my area. 1 a bitch, with horrible skin problems but the most gentle lovley girl in the world The owner was totaly happy for Mia to come over, she just stood and watched as Mia had a tantrum, then gently sniffed her, and they love each other now The other one - big male Looks stunning Owner lets him wonder on his own and I know of 1 little onlead dog who had the skin of his back ripped off by him
MichealM ,Your a tough nut then!, cos I started at the heart attack In my defence I didn't know what the story was about prior to watching it other than a dog And then when it came up it was a true story............
