    Orkney Border Collie health tests?

We have had numerous "chats" here about health testing of our puppies. I have to put my hands up, and admit that none of my BCs have ever had what the average Dogseyer would think of as a health test. This is mainly because all of mine have been simple farmyard tinks, whose farmers would probably not think of "wasting" money on an "unnecessary" vet consultation. (NB - inverted commas indicate a possible farmer view, not mine!)

Kali and Snorri were both physically healthy, and Thorgeir is a wee toughie! Besides, all three passed the Orkney test - they survived the weather! An Orkney barn in inclement weather is not the height of comfort, in winter, it would be even worse!

Orkney farm collies usually have generations of Orkney descent, and are born hardy, ready for a life of chasing sheep through acres of mud!

Having said that, mine have always started their lives with me by taking a trip to the vet, where the worst discovery has been that Thorgeir was carrying some "internal passengers", which were dealt with promptly by a dose of Milbemax! Later, Snorri-dog turned out to be epileptic, but you can't test for that, anyway.

Collies shouldnt have Miblemax, stick to Panucur for pups & Drontal For adults

Milbemax was what the vet gave him - should I refuse it next time?

Yes unless your dog has been DNA tested for MDR-1(multi-drug resistance gene)mutation or comes from MDR1 normal parents.

    From The NOAH site
FYI there is a genetic study being done in the UK into Epilepsy in Border Collies/Working Sheepdogs
