Lucozade Saves The Day For Abandoned German Shepherd Pup

Poor Lucas (aptly named after the energy drink that potentially saved his life) has come on leaps and bounds since he was found covered in mange whilst just a small pup.

It was last year that a rescue centre in Ireland was contacted by a lady who had found a ‘thing’ in her shed. The ‘thing’ turned out to be a young German Shepherd Dog who was so badly covered in mange, it was hard to tell exactly what animal he was, never mind what breed of dog.

The dog was taken to the Cottage Rescue in Ireland where the staff gave him some Lucozade to rehydrate him. The staff there nursed him back to health and he was sent across to the UK in the hope to find him a forever home.
He went into the care of Sussex German Shepherd Rescue who would help rehabilitate him and hopefully find him a new home. Ronnie Richardson, owner of the organisation, said: “A lady called one of the rescuers we work with over there and said she had found this horrible thing in her shed. No one could tell what he was, his face was swollen and he had so much hair missing. He was on death’s door when the rescuer found him.
He was able to recover from severe dehydration using a bottle of Lucozade, earning him the name Lucas.”

The rescue placed Lucas in the expert hands of Miss Pam Williams, a dog fosterer who has had over 22 dogs in the last 7 years in her care. It has been a slow recovery for Lucas – who coincidentally now lives on Lucas Road.

“He has been to the vets over 35 times. I have had to spend a lot of money on vets who specialise in skin disorders and he is still under a dermatologist, but he has come on in leaps and bounds.

“We think he got mange from his mother when he was born and because he was abandoned, and no one did anything to treat him, it got so bad. They think he must have been deaf at one point because the mites were going inside his ears. It must have been unbearable for him.”

Pam has now decided to keep Lucas permanently in her home. It looks like a nice happy ending after-all.

I read all about Lucas on BIGGSD. Pam did a wonderful job with him (as well as his rescuers in Ireland) and he sounds such a sweet character.
